Fresh Install - Mate Desktop /etc/inittab display manager?

I followed the beginners guide and installed X.

I've install mate desktop with extras as described here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mate

I've updateded inittab as described here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Display_Manager but mate display manager is not listed.

x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/xdm -nodaemon wont boot and changing to x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/mdm -nodaemon doesnt boot either.

When booting displayes "INIT: cannot execute /usr/bin/xdm"

What do i put in inittab to boot into mate desktop login?

Re: Fresh Install - Mate Desktop /etc/inittab display manager?

First, check that mdm is actually available at /usr/bin/mdm, and that it's called that. I quickly glanced the wiki entry about mate, and to me it sounded like it wasen't available anymore(in flux?)...

Anyway, if you don't have it, then it's in the aur I see...

A quick google search, showed that a fedore guy got it working by using the same inittab line as the one you posted previously with mdm(in his line, he didn't use -nodaemon, though...)

I'm running Mate on 2 computers but on both I'm using LightDM because MDM wouldn't work. LightDM is available in the AUR.

If you are using systemd, which is probably the case with a fresh install, systemd does not use inittab.  See the following:
