Unless I'm badly mistaken, I can't do any better.

Are you using bitmapped fonts? Even though an antialiasing option is clearly selected, neither the fonts displayed in Firefox nor in your newer screenshot (note the letter "x" in the word "pixel") look particularly smooth.

Spring is here, but it's feeling more like summer. Fun time though!

I changed how I made some of the BG transparent in order to make it look better. I tend to be a perfectionist, so I will probably edit it some more again soon. I also am running conky with a sloppy-hacked version of mpdcontroller that only has the controls. If I took more time, I suppose the hack would be less sloppy but oh well. heh Now to just to get conky and adesklets to start after Xfce4... does anyone know any methods for that?

Yes, Snap is a bitmap font. I know there's a way of making that anti-aliased - I've done that with Conky - but I don't know how to do it with Gnome.

Hmm, strange. I used to have the opposite problem. I set up /etc/fonts/local.conf to do the usual substitutions for bitmapped fonts (Helvetica->Arial, Times->Times New Roman, and so on), which worked perfectly for GTK2 apps, but never worked in KDE apps. So when going to a Web site that requests Helvetica, Konqueror would still look awful.
Anyway, I never found a way to antialias bitmapped fonts, so I ended up disabling them altogether by including /etc/fonts/conf.d/no-bitmaps.conf in local.conf.

Just a couple of screenshots to join in the fun.
#1. Archlinux - Gnome-2.10 - Sun's Java Desktop iconset - Mac layout - Tiger Wallpaper - MySQL Control Center.

#2. This is Archlinux - with Gnome-2.10 running - using a Mac OSX layout and the Sun Solaris-10 'Blue Theme.'

#3. I just couldn't resist at least ONE BSD screenie. DesktopBSD 1.0-RC2 - KDE-3.4.2 - Highly tweaked desktop. Is it OS X? Or is it BSD? You make the call.

Yes I know - I like the OS X look and feel. Not everyone's cup of tea. But I like it.

Theoden: It seems that you have run out of bandwidth on Geocities. Upload your screenshots to ImageShack so everyone can check them out.

I'm pretty sure you can get antialiasing with bitmap fonts by using XFT - as I said, I've done that with Conky. I just don't know how to make stuff other than Conky or Torsmo do it.

Don't I know it, that's what I used with Gentoo. It's not in the repos here though. Haven't bothered to get it from the AUR until now.

Ah, got the sliding font problem figured out. Just change the font settings from "Best Shapes" to "Best Contrast"... Solves everthing.
