Samsung NP530U4B-S01FR: power problems

Hi all!

I'm running archlinux x86_64 and KDE 4.9.1 on this Ultrabook, and experience problems (surely all linked together), which are in decreasing importance:

  • Battery life is only about 2 hours, whereas Windows7 can get up to 6!

  • Computer is hot (~70°C)

  • Sector adaptater is not correctly recognized

  • KDE does not put computer into sleep mode when the lid is closed

So first, I'll tell you what I tried to solve the first issue (and all these failed).
I use systemd so, no acpid (here).
powertop does not significantly expand battery life (only +15minutes when I check everything to "Good")

Then here is the output of acpi -V when plugged on sector:

Battery 0: Full, 100%
Battery 0: design capacity 6120 mAh, last full capacity 6200 mAh = 100%
Adapter 0: on-line
Thermal 0: ok, 29.8 degrees C

Thermal 0: trip point 1 switches to mode passive at temperature 97.0 degrees C
Thermal 1: active, 65.0 degrees C
Thermal 1: trip point 0 switches to mode critical at temperature 99.0 degrees C

Cooling 6: Fan 1 of 1
Cooling 7: Fan 0 of 1
Cooling 8: Fan 0 of 1
Cooling 9: Processor 0 of 10
Cooling 10: Processor 0 of 10

And now I unplug my pC from sector:

Battery 0: Charging, 100%, until charged
Battery 0: design capacity 6120 mAh, last full capacity 6200 mAh = 100%
Adapter 0: off-line
[...]

Now acpi -V when resuming or booting off-sector:

Battery 0: Discharging, 100%, 02:09:12 remaining
Battery 0: design capacity 6120 mAh, last full capacity 6200 mAh = 100%
Adapter 0: off-line
[...]

And when I once again plug my PC to sector

Battery 0: Unknown, 98%
Battery 0: design capacity 6120 mAh, last full capacity 6200 mAh = 100%
Adapter 0: on-line
[...]

That's it for acpi.

Now, computer is hot. Yes, indeed:

acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +67.0°C (crit = +99.0°C)
temp2: +29.8°C (crit = +99.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Physical id 0: +67.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 0: +67.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1: +64.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

My other Laptop (Acer 8942g) is running Archlinux @ 45°C.
I have 2 graphical cards on the laptop: intelHD4000 and ATI Radeon HD6xxx. I'd like to use the ATI one but well, 'fglrx' refuses to launch (invalid bios signature) and 'radeon' is not as good as 'intel' and makes the computer even hotter hmm

So I use the intel one and, even when I disable Desktop Effects (KWin), computer is still hot. Windows does not make my PC burn like that: it is no ventilation (?) problem.

Well, that's it. I don't know if I gave enough information. If not, I'll try to answer as quickly as possible.

Thanks for helping me (here & here too, related to KDE issues).

Re: Samsung NP530U4B-S01FR: power problems

Hey,
I'm experiencing the same problem on a Samsung series 5 530u.

Did you find a solution to the lid and/or adapter problem?

I have seen kernel bugreports for the same but no resolution.

Regards

Re: Samsung NP530U4B-S01FR: power problems

Well, no, sorry... Still trying sad

And I don't think downgrading the kernel would be a great idea. I have these entries to GRUB2 right now :

"quiet pcie_aspm=force i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.i915_enable_fbc=1 i915.lvds_downclock=1 i915.semaphores=1 modprobe.blacklist=radeon"

Hope it helps, please share all the aforementioned files, so we can try some things...

Thanks and welcome aboard this misery LOL smile

Re: Samsung NP530U4B-S01FR: power problems

Okay, I sold this laptop so I won't be any help now. I have a Dell Latitude now with 9cell battery in order not to experience this PITA anymore smile
