Temporary black screen & continuous disk activity when starting up X

I don't know if this issue is related to the the xorg family packages  (xorg-server, xorg-init, etc) or the new kernel (3.5.4-1), but after upgrading whenever starting X I now get around 5-10 seconds of black screen, where my disk led remains on and the hdd can be heard 'straining' (maybe not a representative word for whatever activity is actually occuring!) This passes however and my WM (fluxbox) starts up as normal.

Does anybody have an idea what this might be?

It's probably just drm.
You might want to add intel_agp or i915 or drm_kms_helper to MODULES in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf

All those same lines seem to be in the original post.
I have them all at the same time, if the modules modprobe each other, they should all come on their own as a dependency.
Anywho, I just have my xdm to break me out of not being able to see, but if it weren't for that, I'd have to login blindly and then startx. 
The only reason you'd put the modules in mkinitcpio is so that they load early.
But otherwise there's nothing different going on with your setup, it's just an annoyance.

Listing all of the modules in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf - or getting an early load - hasn't made a difference so not sure what, if anything, can be done here?

If no errors are showing in the kernel.log, does this mean the issue could be related to something other than DRM, do you think?

The arch stock kernel changes the display mode after the udev part.
To try something different you could add nomodeset on the boot kernel command line, but then you lose the video acceleration. vga= is also another option, but the display still changes at the same time during bootup.

There's no DM, I just boot into fluxbox through scripts. I have systemd installed but use initscripts as previously.

Okay, did you by any chance enable persistent logging either in /etc/systemd/journald.conf or by creating /var/log/journal/?
If that is the case, try disabling persistence either by removing the /var/log/journal/ directory, or by changing the line

#Storage=auto

in journald.conf to

Storage=volatile

I had a similar problem until some days ago, it disappeared after I removed /var/log/journal. Before that I had a +10 seconds black screen from startx to openbox, now it flashes briefly and I my WM is loaded.

EDIT: I have no idea how syslog-ng in your rc.conf might play into this, I had it removed while trying to figure out what was causing the slow boot...

No, i've not made any changes to systemd conf files, and the /var/log/journal doesn't exist. The 'Storage=auto' option is the default, though changing it to volatile makes no difference.

You could try to disable syslog{-ng}. But in my case that didn't make any difference.
What does

systemd-analyze blame

give you? Or, even better, upload the picture you get from

systemd-analyze plot > systemd.svg

and post the link here.
I am running out of ideas, but maybe someone more knowledgeable might find that useful...

No, i'm not... though I do see that the systemd-analyze tool could be quite handy if I could get it to work...

I have entered the 'init=/bin/systemd' parameter at the boot kernel, but this will only only take me to a console login (despite a runlevel 5 default), so for the purpose of measuring the time delay at the point we are wanting is no good.

You have to enable the graphical.target and possibly something like xdm.service

Okay, so i've made some progress tonight (i've not had time to tackle this issue during the week!) and have got systemd-analyze (plot + blame) to work. The issue here was related to the fact that I had forgotten this step in the upgrade:

As of yet I have not been able to boot automatically into Fluxbox under systemd, and am dropped off at the command terminal. I don't use a display manager, and reading around am only aware that I should be enabling the graphical.target with systemctl (which I have done)

Getting a blame reading pre and post an X startup, no extra units are listed, though I do not know if systemd would 'chain' extra units if automatically booting into the X server or not...

xf86-video-intel-git from AUR doesn't seem to be sufficient any longer for recent kernel-3.6-2, switching back to normal repo xf86-video-intel.


I may have to CONSOLE you about your usage of ridiculously easy graphical interfaces...

I'm using kernel 3.5.4-1-ARCH, and so just tried re-building the kernel image with 'mkinitcpio -p linux' so as to add in support for the i195 driver now enabled in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf for the early KMS load, but am still getting the delay on a reboot. I think this possibly is a KMS issue as you have identified, as if I switch to another virtual console with ctrl+alt+f1, and start x the delay is gone, which would make sense, no?

I have tried upgrading to the latest xf86-video-intel (ver 2.20.12-1), but this makes no difference, and will freeze the mouse cursor, so revert back to 2.20.8-1.
