i boot my laptop with ubuntu ,the usb3.0 hard drive could be recognized by usb3.0 port without external power, but archlinux cannot.
the write speed is 43.7 MB/s in ubuntu. it seems like that this is only usb2.0 speed.
can archlinux use usb3.0 as usb2.0?
1) the ubuntu dmesg is

hi, everyone
i have a usb 3.0 hard drive and a laptop with usb 3.0 port.
when the hard drive is connected to the usb 3.0 port, the drive could not be found.
the dmesg output is listed below.
additinal info:
1) the usb 3.0 hard drive can be found when connected to usb 2.0 port.
2) the usb 2.0 hard drive can be found when connected to usb 3.0 port.
3) mouse works when connected to the usb 3.0 port.
it seems that it is not the linux driver's problem, because the mouse could work and the hard drive is found due to the dmesg.
is this a bug?
would someone help me?
thank you!

Hey. If it's a PC, could you try in the rear USB ports?

hi,
it is a laptop with two usb 3.0 port and one usb 2.0 port.
both of the usb 3.0 are the same.
thank you.

hi, thank you for replay
yes, it is a 2.5" drive without power supply.
this is a "western digital" usb hard drive: WDBACY5000AWT
here is a Product Specifications
http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/A … 705131.pdf
i don't take my laptop with me. i would try it later.
thank you!

could be possible that the usb3 port does not supply enough power to spin up the drive (min. 1A).
my usb3 2,5" only works with an external supply or when i plug it in my thinkpad's power usb port.
laptop too new? which one do you have?
you could also try another live distro and plug in the usb hd.
in my case, the usb3 speed is somehow limited under arch. i get an average transmission rate from about 30 MB/s but under Win7/Ubuntu it's about ~ 150MB/s

my laptop is thinkpad x230.
details of this laptop is:
i7-3520M(3.6GHz), 4GB RAM, 500GB 7200rpm HD, 12.5in 1366x768 LCD, Intel HD Graphics, Intel 802.11agn wireless, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure Chip, Fingerprint reader, Camera, 6c Li-Ion,
1) this laptop has a usb2.0 port(i think it is usb2.0 because it is yellow, not the usb 3.0's blue), the hard drive can work when connected this usb 2.0 port.
2) Ubuntu could use usb 3.0 without external power supply?

yes the yellow one is the power usb (USB 2 which provides more power than an average usb port > 1 Ampere), i got a thinkpad edge 530 and the USB 3 port has too little power to spin up the drive
I think that ubuntu can't mount it either, but worth one try

tail -f /var/log/messages.log is similar to the dmesg.
1) I have a usb 2.0 hard drive which could use the usb 3.0 port.
2) I remeber x230 with windows XP could use my usb 3.0 hard drive with the usb 3.0 port
3) so, it is a problem of archlinux rather than hardware?
thank you!

Answer already provided by OP https://encrypted.google.com/search?&q=i7-3520M
It is known as Ivy Bridge.
i get an average transmission rate from about 30 MB/s
Looks like the kernel is using usb 2 .
USB 2.0 = 480 Mbit/s
USB 3.0 = 5 Gbit/s

You didn't read my post close enough. I was apologizing for the OT because I was asking this of broken pipe.
Also, 3rd gen intel core would be synonymous with Ivy Bridge, as Ivy Bridge is simply a code name for the 3rd gen.

I assume it is because the reap ports are typically the ones native to the motherboard, whereas the front ports are connected to a usb pin connector. So the back ones tend to be more reliable.

yes but only the arch kernel! i get full usb3 speed under ubuntu!
mine is also a 3rd generation i5 (Ivy Bridge). i think it's a problem with the xhci_module, not the cpu.

I was having a similar issue where my usb 3 HD was not working and this solved my issue with it being usable, I need to check the speed but I have no clue as to why this would have worked.
I am not sure if this will resolve your issue, but it's worth a try :
Connect your Device
Pull the usb cable just a little bit out from the computer side.. ( just a tiny bit) and wait for a couple of minutes..
if it starts working then you may push the usb - cable back in properly.
I faced similar issue..
If it doesn't work then sorry..

Although,
seems the spped is still usb2 speed,

My usb 3.0 harddrive (STBE500200) flawlessly works with my notebook (UX31A) at full speed (108 MB/s read) (when being plugged in with usb 3.0 cord that's shipped with the harddrive).
Plugging it in with usb 2.0 cord crops the speed at 41.4 MB/s (read).
I'm using [testing], so that is linux 3.6.5.
You could try it, it may help.
If it won't, you could try using usb 2.0 cord to force the drive to operate using usb 2.0.
