SOLVED: Arch Installation Setup doesn't begin

Hi,

I burned different Arch iso's from different sources at different speeds but still the same problem.

I enter the DVD, I boot my computer, but where I have to press 'esc' to go into the boot menu (the black screen with HP on it) it just freezes. I've waited for 15 minutes still nothing. Anyone knows what might be on here?

Thanks already!

Different sources my foot... Direct downloads are less reliable than the BitTorrent protocol (which checks the integrity while downloading). Download the ISO using a BitTorrent client instead.

Then go into the BIOS, set the boot order to "Removable Dev." first, "CD-ROM" second and "Internal Storage" third.

I downloaded that ISO, and as first boot device I set 'Upgrade Bay' (no Removable Dev. or CD-ROM available) but then just Windows starts ...

This is a hw problem, not an issue with Arch.  You shoud probably seek help from the manufacturer of your laptop/desktop/motherboard.

What tool did you use to burn the ISO? On Windows, try CDBurnerXP.

ISO image burner, but your tool doesn't work neither.

Have you checked the integrity of the ISO?

The ISO is a liar and a cheat!

I don't know what to say. Write it to a flash drive using Win32 Image Writer.

I recently had a similar problem on an HP laptop. When I attempted to enter the bios with any sort of usb or cd medium plugged into it, the bios froze. What I did was set the cd as the first boot device in the bios, and then insterted the cd, and it worked fine. That might be relevant.

Only other (sensible) possibility is that your CD/DVD drive is mechanically failing sad

Do you have any other bootable media knocking about - Linux magazine cover discs or (gulp) WinXP / 7 installation discs?

Re: SOLVED: Arch Installation Setup doesn't begin

I've recently seen this with an ASUS board, too. If the boot media is already inserted (CD in this case), boot freezes, you can't enter BIOS or get a boot menu or anything. If I open the CD tray, it all suddenly works and once I've got the boot menu, reinserting the CD updates the menu and allows me to boot from it. I don't know why this happens but it seemed fairly consistent regardless of what was set as top choice for boot device.

Thanks that did the job.
