Alps Touchpad detected as PS2 Generic mouse on Dell Inspiron N5110 15R

I Started this thread 2 months ago , at first I was asking for a solution and I didn't get one , So I repeated that thread on different distros forums but I get the same results because of a simple fact that there is no one have solution !! , So I realized that the best way to solve this problem is to gather our forces here so we can create a solution

The Bug : xinput-list shows PS/2 Generic mouse instead of Alps touchpad so multi-touch gestures is not possible ( Probably an unknown alps protocol )
The Effected Laptops : Dell Inspiron N5110 , Acer Aspire V3-771G-9875 , ......... (You name it)

Update 1- installing kernel 3.5.2 from test repos didn't solve the problem

Update 2- installing psmouse-elantech from AUR (as wiki says ) didn't solve the problem it only made xinput-list identifies it as ps/2 elantech mouse

Update 3- installing psmouse-alps from AUR don't have any impact

Update 4- installing extra/xf86-input-evdev and extra/xf86-input-synaptics don't have any impact

Update 6- I contacted Dell ,They says it's Alps responsibility and i contacted alps , They says it's Dell responsibility ( I hate those shitty formal replies )

Update 7- After Some Google-ing I found that a developer managed to brake the unknown alps protocol on dell latitude E6230 which is very similar to our alps protocol , so If any developer owns n5110 please take a look at this http://markmail.org/message/r62dimyqb6f … te:results you might find a clue or a trace to brake that protocol

In the end please keep this thread alive as possible with every new finding , Suggestion ,workaround , possible solution until we solve this F***N bug

I don't have any such hardware, but I don't imagine that would be the right driver.

There is a psmouse-alps package in the AUR with "psmouse kernel module with support for alps touchpad".

This Doesn't Solve It , It Just Made It Revert Back To Ps/2 Generic Mouse

The ALPS patch has been merged into the mainline kernel 3.3, so the psmouse-alps package is now obsolete.

come on guys , no one has even a suggestion ?!!!!! , i don't want to return to that crap called windows , but probably i will be forced to , i have been struggling for over a month
between different distributions trying to solve this problem but no luck

Did you try the 'proto' parameter?

i have the same problem like t-r-e, i had PS/2 generic mouse, then i installed psmouse-elantech, and then i had ps/2 elantech mouse, but still nothing works(gnome extension for disabling touchpad and scrolling etc), i can't belive there isn't solution for that

Have you installed both extra/xf86-input-evdev and extra/xf86-input-synaptics ??
It was not mentioned explicitly -- I'd hate to say good-byes over something so obvious.

Sorry to necro this thread, although it's not quite a month since the last post in here.

I have an Acer Aspire V3-771G-9875 laptop with an ALPS touchpad in it, and I have all the same symptoms as described here. I've edited every file pertaining to evdev and synaptics to try and force my touchpad to read as a touchpad, but nothing will fire. I have no scrolling, and tap-to-click is really freaking annoying.

psmouse-elantech produces no result, neither does psmouse-alps, I've edited the psmouse proto at boot time through modprobe.conf, with no result.

As stated previously, 10-evdev.conf and 10-synaptics.conf don't work, nor does the 10-synaptics.conf from the ArchWIKI pertaining specifically to ALPS touchpads.

Before anyone asks, yes I do indeed have xf86-input-evdev installed, and xf86-input-synaptics, and libsynaptics. Thoughts and suggestions, anyone?

I have an Acer Aspire V3-771G-6650, and I've been experiencing the same problem. In hopes of it being fixed in a newer kernel, I've been using the mainline package, but as of 3.6.0-rc3-mainline, still no luck. Touchpad reports as PS/2 Generic Mouse, changes to PS/2 Elantech Mouse if using the psmouse-elantech package, and seems to be completely unaffected by any other suggested fix I've found (of which matches what t-r-e has listed in the original post as of this writing.)

I'd be happy to provide any information or help that I can to get a fix moving along. I could live without scrolling, multi-finger tapping, and the fancier features, but the tap-to-click is absolutely maddening with its absurd sensitivity. If my hand simply brushes against the touch pad, it will click, which can be incredibly troublesome when trying to type. But with it being considered a mouse, disabling its tap-to-click can only be done by completely disabling its ability to left click.

Same crap with Dell Vostro 3360. It had Ubuntu 11.10 preinstalled, and touchpad worked properly, but in Arch it doesn't .

I've solved this issue for my Dell Vostro 3360.

I've downloaded psmouse-alps-dst-0.4 from here: http://www.dahetral.com/public-download

Then I've downloaded alps.c from here: http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=m404GW1G

and replaced old alps.c with downloaded one.

The I've built this module via dkms and reloaded psmouse module. My touchpad now works as it should.

This module contains reverse-engineered ALPSv6 protocol, so it might help other guys with other laptops.

To build the module, unpack the archive, replace alps.c file with new version, downloaded from pastebin, then copy psmouse-alps-dst-0.4 folder to /usr/src. Then run the commands:

to add module to dkms tree: sudo dkms add psmouse/alps-dst-0.4
to compile it: sudo dkms autoinstall
to reload module: sudo rmmod psmouse && sudo modprobe psmouse

Of course, you have to have dkms installed.

Confirmed working on Dell Latitude E6430. The two finger scrolling and edge scrolling do not work exactly as expected, but they work nevertheless.

This has been driving me nuts for the past year.

I check every now and then to see if someone published a fix and today it's christmas in touchpad land.

I'm scrolling with my two fingers and etc like a mad man now. (I keep one finger pointed at Dell, that's the last of my cash they're seeing.)

and, yes, I registered just to say thanks -- by the way, the rego uname thing is kind of naff; definitely a thumb in the eye for new users but they seem proud of that, so I guess that's the aim
