This is the last message displayed before KDE starts  :?:
I use the ati-drivers with the latest version of the kernel.
If it can't open a display how does kde run   :?:

that's an error from a client, not the xserver - boot into a console and type "firefox" - you'll get the same error

obviously, you're trying to start some app before KDE is started
