[Solved] How do I make Openbox have an area for minimized windows?

Hi, I'm currently trying out window managers. I was using fluxbox.

I'm checking out Openbox and it seems very powerful and nice, but I can't seem to find any documentation I can actually understand. I'd like to switch to it though for a few days and try it out. One huge thing missing with a blank configuration is a bottom dock/menu thing. Basically, when I minimize windows they just go into this abyss beyond the bottom of my monitor. I have no idea how to get to them again. What is this area called, and how do I activate it so I can restore my windows? Also, I'm not using Gnome or KDE or anything, just straight Openbox(and prefer to keep it that way!)

2 things I can think of off the top of my head:

Check out Tint2. I think it was made for Openbox, and is capable of a lot of things. Including what you want openbox to do. Its not a window manager or desktop environment. Just a small application.
Is your resolution correct?

EDIT: Ok, well scratch my second question. I didn't know openbox didn't have a panel by default. Hm.

Openbox does not have a built in panel, you can choose your own.  Just to get the windows back you should be able to use Alt-TAB.

Google for "panels" to see your options; tint2 is popular among openbox users.

I second the use of tint2.  Openbox is a window manager only, it doesn't have any dock bar included, you have to add it.

The Openbox wiki is a wealth of information:

Openbox doesn't come with a bar/task manager. I think most people use one though. You can try out a few and see which one you like. Some popular ones are tint2 and lxpanel but there are plenty of others to choose from. Search the repos or the aur and try some.

I would highly recommend to try BmPanel2 too smile

Best of luck in building your OpenBox session! big_smile

EDIT: Its not a "knowledge source" on its own, but it could help you: Check out the OpenBox screenshots thread. There're a lot of config files posted there and some interesting guidelines

Thanks, now that I know the proper terminology, I can find all the information I need. Tint2 looks quite attractive.. I'll get on this as soon as I fix my recent `pacman -Syu` caused meltdown of my system

You know, I was going to make a snarky comment about how you should check the wiki page for Arch Openbox:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Openbox

and it would be all explained there. But, oddly enough, there is no mention of adding a panel and, even more importantly IMHO, a system tray. Probably an oversight that ought to be rectified, although I don't use Openbox any more.

I like lxpanel myself, especially if you just want a tray.

Feel free to "rectify the oversight", even if you don't use Openbox. The wiki is a community effort.
