[Solved] [gnome-unstable] gnome-settings-daemon does not work

Dear all,

After updating my gnome desktop-environment by enabling gnome-unstable, I found my gnome-shell
had very serious problem. For the first time after boot, I can login into gnome-shell but the UI looks really
awful which means all the personal themes (gtk, icons, windows) stop working. By using:

ps aux | grep gnome

I found there is no process called "gnome-settings-daemon" running. If I logout and re-login, gnome-shell
will always say that there is unsolvable problem and the only thing I can do is logout. I have tried to remove
all the extensions installed but get no luck. Is there anybody else who is also suffering this problem? I will
appreciate very much if anyone can show me the way to get it around.

Best regards,
Zhengyu

I'm running gnome-unstable without major problems since 2012-09-25 but you might find the issue in ~/.cache/gdm/session.log if you use GDM.

you can also look in ~/.xsession-errors or try to run g-s-d with --debug or in a debugger if is crashing.
is really simple

~/.xsession-errors is not used anymore, it can be deleted. The new location is ~/.cache/gdm/session.log.

Thank you very much for the hint. Then I found it was my GTK theme that screwed up new gnome-shell. This is really annoying that every time when gnome-shell get updated, the change is so much that almost everything (themes, extensions, and so on) have to start from scratch. Anyway, thanks so much for your help. And so do others replying this thread.

Best regards,
Zhengyu
