I am using an Advent 4211 netbook (~MS Wind) with Realtek RTL8187SE wireless lan controller and MSI MN54G2/MS-6894 Wireless Mini PCIe card
I tried to load r8169 but I think maybe the driver should be rtl8187se?
dmesg | grep r8169
r8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver 2.3LK-NAPI loaded
r8169 0000:01:00.0: irq 42 for MSI/MSI-X
r8169 0000:01:00.0: eth0 link down
r8169 0000:01:00.0: eth0 RTL8102e at 0xf979000, 00:21:85:e4:5d:8b
Is there a way of explicitly bringing up wireless (and why is it on eth0?) or if it's an incorrect driver issue how do I go about installing the correct one on my usb live distro?
Doing a
iw dev wlan0 link
returns 'nl80211 not found'
edit: think I got mixed up between wireless/wired adapters.
The initial wireless driver ArchLinux with 3.4.7-1 loads on live usb startup appears to be r8180
dmesg | grep r8180
Initializing module
Wireless extensions version 22
Initializing proc filesystem
Configuring chip resources
Channel plan is 2
MAC controller is a RTL8187SE b/g
usValue is 0x100
EEPROM version 104
WW:**PLEASE** REPORT SUCCESSFUL/UNSUCCESSFUL TO Realtek!
IRQ 17
Driver probe completed
Bringing up iface
Card successfully reset
WIRELESS_MODE_G
Am I right in expecting some kind of 'link is up' message here if the driver was working as expected?

Was there something unclear from the Beginners' Guide?
I have made a personal commitment not to reply in topics that start with a lowercase letter. Proper grammar and punctuation is a sign of respect, and if you do not show any, you will NOT receive any help (at least not from me).

I brought the interface up then scanned for networks but it didn't pick up any.
OK so I rmmod r8180 and modprobe r8187se. iwlist wlan0 scan shows my router but when I wifi-menu wlan0 no networks are found?

I've tried to associate with the access point (WEP encryption) but iwconfig wlan0 hasn't changed from 'Not-Associated'.
