[SOLVED] Problem rc.conf deprecated

Hi to everybody!

First of all, I have to say that I have read some post in this forum and I've read the rc.conf wiki page and I don't have anything clear
I upgraded my system yesterday, and when I boot, I receive somo error about the rc.conf being deprecated. I started to read about it and I realised that now, some files replace the rc.conf

Hostname: /etc/hostname or/and /etc/hosts
Console fonts and keymap: /etc/vconsole.conf
Locale: /etc/locale.conf or/and /etc/locale.gen
Timezone:	/etc/localtime
Hardware clock:	/etc/adjtime
Kernel modules:	/etc/modules-load.d/
Daemons:	/etc/rc.conf
Wired network:	/etc/rc.conf

Until here everything correct.
The problem comes when I have to configure the new files.
First of all, this is my rc.conf file:

#
# /etc/rc.conf - Main Configuration for Arch Linux
#

# -----------------------------------------------------------------------
# LOCALIZATION
# -----------------------------------------------------------------------
#
# LOCALE: available languages can be listed with the 'locale -a' command
# HARDWARECLOCK: set to "UTC" or "localtime", any other value will result
# in the hardware clock being left untouched (useful for virtualization)
# TIMEZONE: timezones are found in /usr/share/zoneinfo
# KEYMAP: keymaps are found in /usr/share/kbd/keymaps
# CONSOLEFONT: found in /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts (only needed for non-US)
# CONSOLEMAP: found in /usr/share/kbd/consoletrans
# USECOLOR: use ANSI color sequences in startup messages
#
LOCALE="es_ES.UTF-8"
HARDWARECLOCK="localtime"
TIMEZONE="Europe/Madrid"
KEYMAP="es"
CONSOLEFONT=
CONSOLEMAP=
USECOLOR="yes"

# -----------------------------------------------------------------------
# HARDWARE
# -----------------------------------------------------------------------
#
# MOD_AUTOLOAD: Allow autoloading of modules at boot and when needed
# MOD_BLACKLIST: Prevent udev from loading these modules
# MODULES: Modules to load at boot-up. Prefix with a ! to blacklist.
#
# NOTE: Use of 'MOD_BLACKLIST' is deprecated. Please use ! in the MODULES array.
#
MOD_AUTOLOAD="yes"
#MOD_BLACKLIST=() #deprecated
MODULES=(vboxdrv)

# Scan for LVM volume groups at startup, required if you use LVM
USELVM="no"

# -----------------------------------------------------------------------
# NETWORKING
# -----------------------------------------------------------------------
#
# HOSTNAME: Hostname of machine. Should also be put in /etc/hosts
#
HOSTNAME="WORK_GROUP"

# Use 'ifconfig -a' or 'ls /sys/class/net/' to see all available interfaces.
#
# Interfaces to start at boot-up (in this order)
# Declare each interface then list in INTERFACES
# - prefix an entry in INTERFACES with a ! to disable it
# - no hyphens in your interface names - Bash doesn't like it
#
# DHCP: Set your interface to "dhcp" (eth0="dhcp")
# Wireless: See network profiles below
#

#Static IP example
#eth0="eth0 192.168.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255"
eth0="dhcp"
INTERFACES=(eth0)

# Routes to start at boot-up (in this order)
# Declare each route then list in ROUTES
# - prefix an entry in ROUTES with a ! to disable it
#
gateway="default gw 192.168.0.1"
ROUTES=(!gateway)

# Enable these network profiles at boot-up. These are only useful
# if you happen to need multiple network configurations (ie, laptop users)
# - set to 'menu' to present a menu during boot-up (dialog package required)
# - prefix an entry with a ! to disable it
#
# Network profiles are found in /etc/network.d
#
# This now requires the netcfg package
#
#NETWORKS=(main)

# -----------------------------------------------------------------------
# DAEMONS
# -----------------------------------------------------------------------
#
# Daemons to start at boot-up (in this order)
#   - prefix a daemon with a ! to disable it
# - prefix a daemon with a @ to start it up in the background
#
DAEMONS=(vboxdrv syslog-ng dkms_autoinstaller !network !netfs dbus @wicd @alsa @crond preload openntpd rt5370sta)

Now, when I try to configure the other files I found the have this configuration already:
/etc/hosts

#
# /etc/hosts: static lookup table for host names
#

#<ip-address>   <hostname.domain.org>   <hostname>
127.0.0.1               localhost.localdomain   localhost WORK_GROUP

# End of file

/etc/vconsole.conf does not exist
/etc/locale.gen

## Configuration file for locale-gen
##
## lists of locales that are to be generated by the locale-gen command.
##
## Each line is of the form:
##
##     <locale> <charset>
##
## where <locale> is one of the locales given in /usr/share/i18n/locales
## and <charset> is one of the character sets listed in /usr/share/i18n/charmaps
##
##  Examples:
##  en_US ISO-8859-1
##  en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8
##  de_DE ISO-8859-1
##  de_DE@euro ISO-8859-15
##
## The locale-gen command will generate all the locales,
##  placing them in /usr/lib/locale.
##
## A list of supported locales is included in this file.
## Uncomment the ones you need.
##
## This file names the currently supported and somewhat tested locales.
## If you have any additions please file a glibc bug report.

LOL it is a binary file you don't need to "cat" it.
rc.conf is not deprecated, you may still use it, it will eventually move to [extra] and those file changes are necessary if you are migrating to systemd. Are you getting any error or something ?

EDIT: as long as it is working fine, you don't need to worry about it.

As you can see there are some errors like MODULES= is deprecated. See rc.conf(5) and modules-load.d(5) for details.
That's why I don't know if it is working well or if the other files do not have the same configuration as the rc.conf and it's booting something different

Re: [SOLVED] Problem rc.conf deprecated

These are some variables that are deprecated but they do not affect the functionality and usability of the system . As I said earlier if your system is doing what you want; you are good to go.

EDIT: see 'this' news.

Re: [SOLVED] Problem rc.conf deprecated

You'll get a warning if your rc.conf contains anything except for DAEMONS=(...).

Things should still continue to work even if you do nothing, but it is strongly suggested you move to the new configuration format which is shared with systemd and most other distributions (so that's what is going to be found in documentation, at least in the long-run).

Each of the new configuration files come with man pages, so they should explain what you want. Some of them might need to be created if they do not exist.

To convert, in your case, I would comment out everything except for DAEMONS from rc.conf and do the following:

# echo "LANG=es_ES.UTF8" > /etc/locale.conf
# echo "KEYMAP=es" > /etc/vconsole.conf
# echo "vboxdrv" > /etc/modules-load.d/vbox.conf (but maybe this is already autoloaded? might be worth checking)
# echo "WORK_GROUP > /etc/hostname

The configuration of /etc/locale.gen and /etc/hosts should not have changed, so your locale.gen is correct but your hosts could cause issues. My suggestion to avoid problems is, rather than editing /etc/hosts with the right settings for your hostname, just install the package nss-myhostname and add 'myhostname' to the hosts entry in your /etc/nsswitch.conf, it should just do the right thing for you.

Re: [SOLVED] Problem rc.conf deprecated

Okey, I've done the following

[root@WORK_GROUP emilio]# echo "LANG=es_ES.UTF8" > /etc/locale.conf
[root@WORK_GROUP emilio]# echo "KEYMAP=es" > /etc/vconsole.conf
[root@WORK_GROUP emilio]# echo "WORK_GROUP" > /etc/hostname
[root@WORK_GROUP emilio]# yaourt -S nss-myhostname

    line in /etc/nsswitch.conf.
[root@WORK_GROUP emilio]# nano /etc/nsswitch.conf

And this file contains the following:

# Begin /etc/nsswitch.conf

passwd: files

shadow: files

publickey: files

hosts: files dns myhostname
networks: files

protocols: files
services: files
ethers: files
rpc: files

netgroup: files

# End /etc/nsswitch.conf

If I have understand what you have said correctly, what I have to do know is, comment all the lines in the rc.conf except the DAEMONS=(...) one.
I should also check if vboxdrv is autoloaded and if not I have to do

# echo "vboxdrv" > /etc/modules-load.d/vbox.conf

Is it correct? How do I check if vboxdrv is autoloaded?

Thanks tomegun and illusionist

Re: [SOLVED] Problem rc.conf deprecated

I just finished doing the same thing on my computer! smile After I fixed the deprecated rc.conf warnings my computer runs a lot better, especially Firefox.

In my opinion, the easiest documentation is "man archlinux". It has a list of simple steps describing how to configure Arch Linux. And if a configuration file doen't exist, just create it.

Now my rc.conf file is almost empty (like it should be), and I'm all ready to upgrade to systemd.

Yes, you successfully loaded vboxdrv. Also, you can just try starting VirtualBox. It will complain if the driver isn't loaded. wink

Good luck!

Thanks, I've done everything you told and it seems to be correct now.
But now there's another problem, when I try to execute chromium-dev I receive the following output:

I would mark this one as solved and open a new post with your new problem, as it isn't related, I'm pretty sure.
