I include the nouveau driver in my initramfs-linux.img as part of the MODULES= config but I have noticed that my desktop locks up until I move my mouse if I leave xf86-video-nouveau installed. The lockup goes away if I uninstall xf86-video-nouveau.
Kinda out in the cold because pacman will not inform me of nouveau updates obviously because I no longer have it installed so I get stuck with older version of the nouveau module in my initramfs when I rebuild my kernel after linux is updated and there was a nouveau update since the last linux update.
Is this the way it's supposed to be?

Sounds like you should re-install xf86-video-nouveau, then troubleshoot the desktop locking issue.
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
