Hi everybody,
I updated my system two days ago and now I cannot login into KDM. Everytime I boot the computer, it tries to start KDM but it crashes and comes to the console login. Has anybody had this problem after updating from kde 4.9.0 to 4.9.1?
When I try from the console to start kde (startkde), it says
$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server
Does anybody has any idea?
Thanks!

I also got the error
Id "x" respawining too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
Any ideas?

What happens if you start something really basic like twm, instead? (If you installed following the Beginners' Guide, you probably did this to test X before installing KDE originally.) That would at least tell you whether it is KDE-specific or not.
Otherwise, it will be hard for people to guess if they don't know what (else) was upgraded and how your login is configured.

I can start the X service... It means, if I log in as root and I type:
startx
The desktop starts...
Thanks for any idea...

So I think you need to supply a bit more information before anyone can actually help you (as cfr already told you, who is in fact a kde user and may actually be able to help you). But without things like how you start kde? inittab or daemons array, what do both look like? What did you update exactly before the breakage? This is really basic information...

My problem is, I cannot send you the information about logs because I have to type them in... I don't have graphical desktop...
I use Archlinux since 6 years, with some problems during updates (which normally works, but sometimes cause some problems). I start kde as a daemon (kdm) and inittab is also set to 5 (graphical interface start).
I just updated my system with pacman -Syu as usual and my system was not very old (I usually update it at least once a week).
After the update, I was not able to start the kdm, the computer tries to start it, but it seems to crash and goes back to the console log in screen
When I log in in the console as normal user and I type startkde, it says that "$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server". The only thing it works, is startx but it takes me to a very basic X environment.
Until now, I have been able to solve many problems in Archlinux, but here I dont know what changed since the last update!!!
By the way, I'm also using NVIDIA drivers, but they work very well in the past.
Thanks for the help

Do you work as root?
To know or not to know ...
... the questions remain forever.

Do you work as root?
No. Just as normal user. I only use the root for admin purposes

Hi everybody!
I have found the problem!!!! There was no free space in the root partition. After making the update, the partition run out of space.
With
pacman -Scc
I cleared the cache and now kdm is starting and I can work without problems!!!
Thanks for the help :-D

Do you not have CheckSpace enabled for pacman? There was a recommendation regarding this during an update a while ago.
