Which 2.6 kernel do you MOST OFTEN use?

We are trying to make some decisions about how to build unionfs modules in Archie.  I think they should be supplied built against the stock kernel but Ziggy disagrees.  I think we should play to the wider audience by assuming most people use stock, Ziggy thinks most people trying to build an Archie ISO will be using a custom kernel.  So I figured a poll would generally help clear the air.  I'd also like to point out that we aren't having a huge arguement about it, would just needs some more info on which to base a decision.  Well, Ziggy makes the decisions - I just interfere.

The poll options relate to the "basic" nature of the kernel, we are not trying to cover every eventuallity!

This is not a poll about favourites it is about usage so please don't bother with any post advocating certain patchsets - we don't care.

Well does that use the same modules as kernel26?  I dunno, I never used it!

Re: Which 2.6 kernel do you MOST OFTEN use?

Using the archck stock kernel currently, and I'm pretty satisfied- but there is one regression:
While the old (2.6.12) kernel oops when unmounting NTFS volumes at shutdown does not exist anymore, when you try booting your alternate (windows) OS in dualboot systems you are still prompted for a sanity check. So, I guess the issue was only half-cooked by the kernel.org developers...
Does anybody know a working patch for 2.6.13 for this specific problem? I could not find any...

Re: Which 2.6 kernel do you MOST OFTEN use?

kernel26 [current]

I used to play with kernels all the time but got tired of doing so.  As long as the stock kernel works properly for me, I'll continue to use it.

Re: Which 2.6 kernel do you MOST OFTEN use?

i use the kernel26-scsi

reason being i have scsi drives in my tower & a zip disk which gets recognized as sdx
usb devices pens/drives are also sdx i find i have less problems with support of devices using the kernel26-scsi
i dont recall what my problem was a while back but i do know i switched to scsi kernel problem fixed  i know it wasnt my scsi drive it was something else i think my old wificard
i have built a few of my own kernels but mostly run stock

Re: Which 2.6 kernel do you MOST OFTEN use?

I build my custom vanilla kernels or from time to time mm kernels. They gave me the best performance and stbility till now. I personaly had some problems with the ck-patchset and patchsets relating on it, so I don't use them anymore.

I got really conservative since my "wild" gentoo/nitro days. wink

Re: Which 2.6 kernel do you MOST OFTEN use?

I use the kernel in my signature. I voted "custom build (using another patchset that provides unionfs)", because unionfs is in, even though I don't use it.

EDIT: I'm updating soon to 2.6.14-rc3-nitro1.

I've always been dubious about how many people actually use the kernel26mm pkg...

I use the vanilla kernel, configured with only the options that I need for my system.

Re: Which 2.6 kernel do you MOST OFTEN use?

Getting direct rendering with DRI-supported cards on kernel26mm is annoying, because the DRM is built into the kernel in that package, for some stupid reason.

Re: Which 2.6 kernel do you MOST OFTEN use?

I used archck up until the latest upgrade, which is slower than stock for some unknown reason. I'm using arch stock now.

Re: Which 2.6 kernel do you MOST OFTEN use?

I use a few -MM patches, CK patch, GregKH patches(updates USB, Drivers, PCI, complete removal of Devfs, few others), and a few misc patches.
Need to update to CK7, 2.6.12.3 and try a few other patches

I think that would be "custom build (anything else)".
