X doesn't start in Vbox with guest additions installed (Solved)

Hi all. I just installed Arch in Vbox and all went well until I installed the guest additions package with pacman. Now X won't start. I uninstalled the guest additions package and X starts normally.

Any ideas?

Try to remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf (it should work fine without an xorg.conf file). If you still have problems, post the content of /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Re: X doesn't start in Vbox with guest additions installed (Solved)

olive.....thanks for the reply.

Deleted /etc/X11/xorg.conf, reinstalled the guest additions package and X won't start. Can't really post the output of /var/log/Xorg.0.log because there's no way to copy-paste it. One line did say, however, "failed to load module "vboxvideo" (module requirement mismatch). Could it be that the guest additions package is not in synch with Xorg?

If you just installed it, it's probably related to xorg-server 1.13 which the vbox video modues doesn't support yet.

Same story. I had to downgrade these packages to make things work, so if you find and install them, it should resolve the issue:

$ cd /var/cache/pacman/pkg
# pacman -U xorg-server-common-1.12.4-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
# pacman -U xf86-input-evdev-2.7.3-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz (not really sure if downgrading this one is necessary)
# pacman -U xorg-server-1.12.4-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

Or similar packages according to your architecture.

iodine, I'm guessing OpenGL doesn't work, though? Not a big deal, but something to be aware of.

Re: X doesn't start in Vbox with guest additions installed (Solved)

Had the same symptoms today after upgrading my Archlinux VM. Downgrading as iodine indicated solved (temporarily I'm afraid) the problem.

I have to say that downgrading to xorg-server-1.12.4-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz forced me to remove xf86-video-vesa (2.3.2-2)

Thanks!

Well, at least glxgears runs, although with some warnings:

Not sure what that means, though.

I can confirm that downgrading works.
