New Install - startx results in blank screen with mouse cursor

I installed Arch on my desktop last week with no issues, so I wanted to install it on an old THinkpad R31. Everything with the installation went smooth, but when I try to 'startx' all I get is a blank screen with a mouse cursor that I can move around. I've installed xorg-xinit, xorg-twm, xorg-xclock, and xterm.

I'm not getting any significant errors in the logs, or even the terminal I issue 'startx' in.

I'm not sure what the problem could be...

Here is my output from 'startx'

Re: New Install - startx results in blank screen with mouse cursor

Post your ~/.xinitrc.
You have to start some WM e.g. twm.

Re: New Install - startx results in blank screen with mouse cursor

karol,

It's a brand new install, so it should default to the TWM. My ~/.xinitrc does not exist yet.

As per the documentation, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg

If you want to start X without a display manager, install the package xorg-xinit. Optionally, the packages xorg-twm, xorg-xclock and xterm allows for a default environment, as described below.
The startx and xinit commands will start the X server and clients (the startx script is merely a front end to the more versatile xinit command). To determine the client to run, startx/xinit will first look to parse a ~/.xinitrc file in the user's home directory. In the absence of ~/.xinitrc, it defaults to the global file /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc, which defaults to starting a basic environment with the Twm window manager, Xclock and Xterm.

So the xinitrc being used is

#!/bin/sh

userresources=$HOME/.Xresources
usermodmap=$HOME/.Xmodmap
sysresources=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xresources
sysmodmap=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap

# merge in defaults and keymaps

if [ -f $sysresources ]; then

    xrdb -merge $sysresources

fi

if [ -f $sysmodmap ]; then
    xmodmap $sysmodmap
fi

if [ -f "$userresources" ]; then

    xrdb -merge "$userresources"

fi

if [ -f "$usermodmap" ]; then
    xmodmap "$usermodmap"
fi

# start some nice programs

if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ] ; then
	for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/* ; do
		[ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
	done
	unset f
fi

twm &
xclock -geometry 50x50-1+1 &
xterm -geometry 80x50+494+51 &
xterm -geometry 80x20+494-0 &
exec xterm -geometry 80x66+0+0 -name login

Re: New Install - startx results in blank screen with mouse cursor

I'm using years-old (but up to date) install. I've renamed my .xinitrc and the default /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc works for me.

I'm glad it works for you. It works on my desktop as well, but it still doesn't help the issue with my laptop.

Re: New Install - startx results in blank screen with mouse cursor

Well, you have to work on the (EE) errors:

[ 4955.492] (EE) Failed to load module "vesa" (module does not exist, 0)
[ 4955.492] (EE) Failed to load module "modesetting" (module does not exist, 0)
[ 4955.493] (EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)

These are the ones that make your X server fail.

A quick search with pacman -Ss or yaourt -Ss returns:

xf86-video-vesa
xf86-video-fbdev
xf86-video-modestting (this one is in AUR)

Try to install them and see how if that fixes your problem.

Re: New Install - startx results in blank screen with mouse cursor

@0x001A4:
To run twm, you need to install xorg-twm from [extra] (I am not sure if it installs by default). Do you have xterm installed?

Regarding the errors... They are harmless and do not need fixing. If you have a proper graphics driver (intel, radeon, etc) you don't need vesa/fbdev/modesetting. Also FWIW complaint about modesetting is a new thing since Xorg 1.13.

I do indeed.

I went ahead and installed LXDE anyways, just to see what would happen. Exact same thing, it looks like everything is about to load but only the mouse cursor shows up. My Xorg.0.log is the same, so I won't post it again.

I do get an error in the console about the openbox menu.xml file missing but I doubt that's related.

Re: New Install - startx results in blank screen with mouse cursor

What are all the "extensions" from?  Do you have an xorg.conf?  If so have you tried moving/renaming it and attempting to start X without one?

Re: New Install - startx results in blank screen with mouse cursor

I have
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-quirks.conf

I took away both and the same thing happened but mouse and keyboard stop working too.

Re: New Install - startx results in blank screen with mouse cursor

Those should both be fine.  I'm not familiar with all those "initializing built-in extension" lines you get from starting X.  It could well be my ignorance of something basic that I have just not had the occasion to see before, but as it is different, it piques my curiosity as to whether those initializations could be relevant to the problem.

Oops sorry, I missed that. The problem appears to be not in your Xorg. So you need to tell us more about your system. IIn particular, do you use KMS with intel (as it follows from Xorg.0.log) and what daemons you have running (dbus is of most interest).

Well, those are bult-in extensions which X server loads. Some extensions are implemented via moduls, some are included in core functionality. Check your Xorg.log -- you have them too.

Actually I just now noticed these.  They are new for me as of a recent (<~1week) update.  So never mind all those.

I'm loading the bare minimum daemons. So dbus is not running. But after manually starting it I still get the same problem.

As far as I know, KMS is enabled by default, no? How can I check that?

EDIT:  sorry I meant to include the daemons that are running which are syslog and crond. But I've started dbus manually and no success.

Re: New Install - startx results in blank screen with mouse cursor

Thinkwiki's page on the R31 http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:R31 says that it has Intel i810 video. I see there's a xf86-video-intel package in extra and an i810-dri package in community for the i810. Have you tried installing those? The i810 in the R31 may be too old to do vesa video.

I initially installed the xf86-video-intel package. I just tried i810-dri with no luck.

Re: New Install - startx results in blank screen with mouse cursor

I started looking at this again this morning and found some wierd stuff.

For one, after I do startx and can only see the mouse cursor, twm and xterm are starting successfully and running. If I move the mouse towards the top left corner, and press CTRL+D, it closes the xterm and ends the X session. So xterm is there but I just cant see them for some reason.

I tried reinstalling the xf86-video-intel drivers. It pulls in intel-dri which is the Mesa drivers for Intel. But as gun26 pointed out, there is also a i810-dri package which is "Mesa drivers for Intel i810". I've tried installing it but I dont know if X is actually using this or just using intel-dri. Is there a way I can force it to use i810-dri?

I also tried switching between "uxa" and "sna", but no difference there.

Re: New Install - startx results in blank screen with mouse cursor

Check first if X at all works, by running 'xinit /usr/bin/xterm', which should open a terminal in the upper left. to quit X, run 'pkill x'.

You've stated you'ed installed lxde, but not that you've enabled it through your personal .xinitrc?

If X dosen't work flat out, I cannot help, sorry...

Edit: Im very sorry - I reread your posts and see that X works and that you had used a personal .xinitrc... Sorry again - I shouldn't have replied as I don't know the answer...
