Re: [SOLVED] Weird artifacts after upgrade to linux-3.5.3-1

Same problem here with custom built desktop.  Just rebooted after kernel upgrade.  Also of note -  xorg-server and xf86-video-intel were also upgraded prior to this reboot.

Currently my screen looks just like the OP's images.  However, it appears to me that the second image in the first post (after downgrade of kernel) still has artifacts.    I haven't downgraded any packages yet.  Will investigate further tomorrow.

Could you point out where you think there are still artifacts in the screenshot after the downgrade? To me everything looks as I have seen it always.

Re: [SOLVED] Weird artifacts after upgrade to linux-3.5.3-1

I found the problem tongue

In the past I encountered lots of artifacts with KMS enabled on my 6820s, so my first idea was to disable KMS on the NX9420. This proved to be the solution for the problem.

With KMS disabled I upgraded to latest kernel and rebooted, resulting in no more artifacts.

@HoZ, I hope this solution also works with Intel graphics.

Next step is to find out how to file a bug-report wink

My apologies, you are correct.  The artifacts I was seeing was a result of my own screen corruption.  Viewing your posted images from another computer, I can see the second image is fine.  I will try disabling KMS when I return home this evening and see if this solves my problem as well.

Re: [SOLVED] Weird artifacts after upgrade to linux-3.5.3-1

I can confirm the problem as well as the solution of disabling KMS for my Mobility Radeon X1400, running with xf86-video-ati.

In addition, I'd like to explicitly point out that this problem also affects font-rendering in graphical terminals (not just GUI-programs as on NeoXP's screenshot), making them largely unusable. Consider exhibit a.
I just wanted to mention this in case there are more people who, like me, didn't see the correlation at first.

Yes, I noticed this as well. Although mine was not as unreadable as the image you posted, the distortion was quite evident.  On a side note, my two Arch boxes at the office (Intel graphics on one, the other nouveau ) do not seem to be affected.  However, the one office box with Intel graphics is an i915 chipset, the box at home with the problem is Intel HD Graphics (Sandy Bridge).

I didn't mention it, but I can confirm this. But only when opening a terminal in graphical server.

In your sig it says that you are running Fedora on you Dell, is this is true then it is plausible that the problem is Arch related and not upstream.

I know, sig is different, sometimes people get confused. But I swap HDDs between my systems many times a week. I 'm still typing from my Dell with Arch. Still no issues.

your logs look fine. Maybe debugging packages could help locate the issue.

Yes, that's what I meant by "graphical terminal". Sorry for the impreciseness.

Just to be sure: You use the radeon-driver (xf86-video-ati), not catalyst, right?

My card lost catalyst support years ago. So no catalyst. opensource driver only..

Possible, but I don't have a clue which packages to debug.

Install mesa-demos and show the  glxinfo, glxgears ouptut for debugging Xorg.

Edit:
For KMS related debugging,
This one is from fedora, but I guess its still valid.

Re: [SOLVED] Weird artifacts after upgrade to linux-3.5.3-1

I have decided to move to the lts kernel for now on the affected machine.  So far, it works well.   It seems that the intel driver requires KMS for xorg to function, so disabling KMS is evidently not an option.

My problem is solved with kernel 3.6.2. Bug report is closed.

Glad to hear 3.6.2 works for you.  Unfortunately, I still have this issue with 3.6.2-1.   However, the lts kernel still continues to work for me.

The new kernel fixed it for me, too. In fact, with radeon.modeset=0 still set, the system even hung while booting. Doesn't look like anyone else is having this problem, though...
