Intel onboard video card, tearing

Hi,

I've got a new motherboard, with an onboard Intel video card. I'm not going to play games, but movies should run reasonably well, shouldn't they? Yet I've got tearing, even on moderate resolution.

I've heard about Intel using system memory for video memory, but I can't find any useful info on the subject. Can I dedicate a reasonable amount of RAM to my video card?

I use KDE, xf86-video-intel.

Re: Intel onboard video card, tearing

There are certain BIOS settings, as it turned out:

Integrated Graphics Devices Configuration

Integrated Graphics Share Memory [64]      (Can't be stepped up beyond [128])
Integrated Graphics DVMT Memory [256]    (Can't be stepped up beyond [Maximum])

Unfortunately, with everything stepped up the tearing is still there, just as before.

Try this.
In my case it got rid of the tearing, especially if used together with mplayer-vaapi from the official repos. Youtube/Flash still has tearing issues, but I have the impression it got a bit better.

Question: How to play media with VAAPI?
Answer
VAAPI is supported on G45/GM45 platforms and later. Make sure you have:
1. Intel video driver package. The latest stable release is recommended.
2. The media player supports VAAPI. e.g. if you want to use mplayer, you need compile and install the mplayer source package with the mplayer vaapi patches.
3. libva driver git://git.freedesktop.org/git/libva, need to compile and install.

You need the following packages.
1. xf86-video-intel
2. mplayer-vaapi
3. libva-vdpau-driver

On my desktop i had best results with this option in the "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf" file.
Option    "XvPreferOverlay"    "on"
Option    "AccelMethod"    "sna"
The "TearFree" option did not work for me, because it massively slowed down 3d performance.

Re: Intel onboard video card, tearing

Thanks, guys!

The methods work, more or less, but at a cost. I'd better buy a cheap Nvidia card...

Re: Intel onboard video card, tearing

teateawhy,

I've got your config as the least of all evils. One thing remains less than tolerable, unfortunately: after playing normally one media file, it won't reset properly. It shows some crazy interleaving, parts of the previous media picture, etc. Is there a way to reset the library or whatever, short of rebooting or logging out?

BTW, VLC player looks like it adopted the new way of playing things without asking.
