Raid 0: number of disks

Hello,
I have a question regarding raid0 setup.
I have 3 500 GB stata II segate disks, i would like to put them in raid0 for performance, iv read that its best to use 2,4,6, etc disks for raid0, is this true?
Secondly im thinking of putting JFS as file system for performace for both small/large files?

thanks

Re: Raid 0: number of disks

You can use 3 disks, I don't know if this impacts performance.
With regard to fs, ext4 should be fine too. Without more info (how many how small files) nobody will be able to give you a definite answers and you'll get "I'm using <this_filesystem> and I like it" replies.

Re: Raid 0: number of disks

In my experience, there's no reason not to use three drives.  In fact, three drives can increase performance vs. two drives, but it depends on your hardware.  Of course, each additional drive also increases probability of failure.

Regarding filesystems, I seem to recall reading that JFS was the best all-around linux fs for use on a RAID.  I have no experience with it myself though.

Re: Raid 0: number of disks

Thanks for the reply,
regarding the small/large files, i meant a generic use, i will at times be using small files as all OS's do,
and at times be watching videos/music which are large.

My system is as follows:
Intel corei3 3ghz
3 Western Digital WD BLACK 7200, 32 mb cache
16gb RAM
500W PSU

xfs would be a better choice than jfs. More activly maintained, and with recent versions is scales quite nicely.
