[Solved]xf86-video-intel victim here...

More Update: Upon looking into filing a bug upstream, I found that this issue had already been reported and taken care of.  The fix will be included in the next update.  So for now, you may either disable sna in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d or you may simply install the package from testing.  I have gone the testing route, and the issue is gone.  Thanks all for confirming that I wasn't the only poor sap here...

Update: Before you read this long post, I determined that my problem is caused by the xf86-video-intel update.

So I just figured I would post this right quick, even though I have yet to really probe what is the cause.  Just thought if there was anyone else experiencing this, I could start a place for discussion.

Today I updated, like I do everyday, and all was well.  Then I went ahead and rebooted to access something in my bios.  When my machine came back on, all the applications looked like an unclassified government document.  It was as though all the text was redacted, covered in black boxes.  I could see the text if I highlighted it, but it was pretty bad.  I should have taken a screen shot, but I just wanted that crap off my computer.

I checked what had updated, and I will list it below, but what I ended up doing is just using the ARM to go back to yesterday.  I rebooted, and all is well... so something between yesterday and today made sh*t crazy.  Oddly, the fonts were only this way in my browser(s).  I only have dwb, firefox and chromium, so at least those three.  Rxvt-unicode was fine, except the pseudo transparency was not working.

I will do some digging, but for now, here is what was upgraded that caused the f*ck-up.

You know, I didn't realize that I had upgraded xf86-video-intel earlier.  I have seen other posts about this wreaking havoc on newer intel gpus, but I thought I had dodged it.  Maybe that is it.

I may have to inspect in the morning...  I'll update when I embark on that mission.

Edit: I also should have mentioned that my newer hardware is an Intel based i5 laptop.  It is Ivy Bridge, ergo my GPU is the HD4000.

Same problem here. Black boexs isntead of text on ivy bridge i5. Very unsatisfied with recent updates, gnome shortcut problems and now this. Disabling sna acceleration or roling back to xf86-video-intel-2.20.9-2 removes black boxes.

Re: [Solved]xf86-video-intel victim here...

What accel method are you using in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf? I have the latest Intel driver on HD4000 graphics (i7 3820QM), using SNA and I haven't noticed any problems.

$ pacman -Qs intel
local/intel-dri 9.0-1

Re: [Solved]xf86-video-intel victim here...

Same problem with xf86-video-intel 2.20.10-1.  Chip is i7-3770K.

Section "Device"
  Identifier "iGPU"
  Driver "Intel"
  Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
EndSection

@OP - You probably wanna open a flyspray with Arch and with upstream.  Use a screenshot:

No need for "me too" posts. The problem is known and already fixed in 2.20.12 that's in [testing].

Re: [Solved]xf86-video-intel victim here...

I have updated the title as [Solved], and included the temporary fix in the first post.  In case you don't want to scroll up, just disable sna (use uxa), or upgrade this one package to the one in testing.

Re: [Solved]xf86-video-intel victim here...

Note that 2.20.12-1 is now in stable. (I was about to disable sna as I'd been intending to reboot but guess the fix has been so quick I need not take the trouble. Though I wonder if disabling sna wouldn't be the wiser part of cutting-edge in any case...)

Re: [Solved]xf86-video-intel victim here...

Yeah, I updated... though I already had the testing package there, so no change.  I say leave sna, but have a commented uxa line below it.  That way enabling it will be fairly easy even if your graphics are pretty f*cked.

IIRC uxa is the default, so commenting out sna (and a reboot) is all you need.

Re: [Solved]xf86-video-intel victim here...

I've gone with the commented line. (I assume I just use "uxa" rather than "sna".) This I may find. Whether I'll remember it is default is more problematic!

That is a good point cfr.  I guess too, you can always change it from a tty, since those kept working flawlessly during this issue.

I try to build in emergency escape routes which will be maximally visible to me during emergencies. Commented lines in text configuration files are pretty much top of my visibility list for these purposes. Remembering stuff is not. smile

Re: [Solved]xf86-video-intel victim here...

Yeah, I cannot even begin to count the number of times I have re-discovered things while soving problems.  It is always good to have some reminders documented where you know you will find them.  But I find that sometimes this can be like when I put my keys somewhere thinking, "I'll put my keys here so that I will be able to find them," and then find myself going "ah crap!"
