very limited volume adjustment range

Hey all,

When i try to adjust the volume, my sound is completely silent until about 3/4 the way through the volume slider.  In that upper 1/4 of the volume slider, there is only coarse adjustment from very quiet to max volume.

I know it's an arch/linux issue, because it doesn't happen in Windows on the same machine, and it was there before I reinstalled from scratch last week (not for this issue). It's also in both gnome and xfce4--whether through the GUI, or through alsamixer.  It's always the same.

Does anyone know what is causing this, or how to fix it?

Re: very limited volume adjustment range

Try using the Pulse Audio Volume Control applet (pavucontrol).  I find it gives a much larger range of volume on my machine than Alsa Mixer does.

Actually you might find the following a better solution (haven't tried it yet myself).
