Popping noise and right speaker won't work

No sound comes out of my right speaker. I tried turning the volume all the way up in Alsa mixer for the relevant channels (I can't remember exactly which ones but I followed the steps in the installation guide). This happens with both my laptop speakers and my external speakers (they connect to the headphone jack but they aren't really headphones).

Also, I'm getting a consistently timed popping noise coming out of that speaker, but only from my laptop speaker. It's like a metronome. When I plug in my external speakers it goes away. I turn the volume all the way up on the speakers and it's totally silent.

I'm stumped. Any input would be appreciated.

Re: Popping noise and right speaker won't work

This doesn't sound like a software issue.

Edit: Boot into the livecd (installer disc) or any live distro, and run speaker-test or play music or whatever and see if the speaker works.  I guess you could also try using a new account.  If those things fail, I would say it is your hardware and not the installation.

I tried running the speaker test when I first installed Arch and it did the same thing. Sound came out of the right speaker but not the left. In Windows both speakers work and none of them pop.

Wow that is pretty funky.  Have you checked that your kernel modules are correct for your hardware, or that there aren't numerous modules competing for the same hardware?

Now that I think about it, it probably is the kernel modules. My previous Ubuntu install also had a problem with the right speaker. How do I check if there are multiple modules fighting for the same hardware?

The driver (snd_hda_intel) comes up in lsmod.

I tried using speaker-test. It would only play the front left without switching to the front right, so I tried

speaker-test -s 2

and it gave me an error saying that I was giving an invalid option for -s.
