lmsensors sending high temp without CPU under load at all

Hey,

Unfortunately I can not remember when it happened for the first time, but for about two weeks my arch linux laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad T420) is powering the fan all the time. Also the temperatures returned by "sensors" are higher than berfore (about 10°C higher).

[i42n@laptop-st ~]$ sensors
thinkpad-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
fan1: 3583 RPM

acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +58.0°C (crit = +98.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Physical id 0: +58.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 0: +43.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1: +46.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

So according to those values it is ok that the fan is running. However I can not determine where those higher temps come from. According to powertop my CPU is completly idle most of the time:

            Package | Core | CPU 0 CPU 1
                    | | Actual 2.5 GHz 2.5 GHz

1000 MHz 0.0% | 1000 MHz 0.0% | 1000 MHz 0.0% 0.0%
 800 MHz 1.1% | 800 MHz 1.1% | 800 MHz 1.1% 0.0%
Idle 98.9% | Idle 98.9% | Idle 98.9% 100.0%

Also thinkfan daemon is running properly:

[i42n@laptop-st ~]$ systemctl | grep fan
thinkfan.service loaded active running Thinkfan Daemon - simple and lightweight fan control program

Looking at those facts I am really out of ideas what is going wrong. My CPU does not have any work and the GPU can not be under load because I tested all this without launching X-server.

Actually I think that there is something running that heats the CPU up, as the air coming out of the fan is warm (not hot). But I can not find any CPU using processes by using top:

%Cpu(s): 0.7 us, 0.2 sy, 0.0 ni, 99.1 id, 0.0 wa, 0.0 hi, 0.0 si, 0.0 st

FYI:

Linux laptop-st 3.6.2-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Oct 12 23:58:58 CEST 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Any tips what I can do?

Re: lmsensors sending high temp without CPU under load at all

Hey,

it seems like I actually fixed it. I did a initram.fs rebuild like it is described here:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … Setting.29

Maybe my tip was right that the intel GPU was doing some zombie operations smile

The temperatures are back to normal now:

[i42n@laptop-st ~]$ sensors
thinkpad-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
fan1: 1977 RPM

acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +41.0°C (crit = +98.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Physical id 0: +41.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 0: +37.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1: +39.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

I do not now what changed now and why this problem suddenly appeared two weeks ago. Probably a kernel update that did not rebuild the initramfs properly. Maybe someone of you can tell me?

Re: lmsensors sending high temp without CPU under load at all

Hi,

i sometimes have the exact same problem. No load, idle system and a temperature about 10 degrees higher than usual. The funny thing is, sometimes (not always, it's seems to be quite random) after i resume after suspending the temperature is back to normal. However, rebuilding the intram.fs did not solve my problem. Up to now, each time i booted the system the temps where high, forcing me to suspend and resume one or two times until they went back to normal again.

Do you have any clue where i can look to inspect this further?

Regards

@i42n Cheers mate you just solved my problem. This was definitely after a kernel update. I've fixed it by downgrading the kernel. I've just upgraded again and rebuild the initram.fs and it works like a charm.
