Only AMD knows!
Before they changed their release policy, they used to have two or three teams working independently on various version of the driver, which were merged from time to time. So maybe xorg-server 1.13 compatibility has been implemented by driver team A in 12.9 which could be the codebase for 12.11 (hence both 12.9 and 12.11 supports 1.13), while 12.10 is developed by team B and has not been merged yet with 12.9. This could be possible since 12.10 is the "Ubuntu version" which probably has been frozen before 12.9 added the 1.13 compatibility.
Anyway, it is a big mess, IMHO. I'm almost happy that I have a 3470 so that I'm stuck with legacy driver and does not have to cope with this xorg-server update mess thanks to Vi0l0's xorg repositories...

It's possible version of the story.
+ There really was no 12.9 driver, 12.9 was named so by us because of term of the release, "ubuntu's special release" is actually versioned as 9.000.
But let's get back to catalyst 12.11
,citing Kano from Phoronix Forums:
You can forget 12.10 driver, but this driver (12.11) has at least h264 l5.1 for xvba active without hacks and i was able to play 2 rage missions with it, older drivers crashed much earlier. Well fglrx improves, but slowly...
So after testing and confirming it's stable i've pushed 12.11 into AUR & [catalyst]
Unia wrote:Catalyst-dkms 12.10 from [community] works properly, you just have to rollback Xorg to 1.12.
It's the reason for an update to 12.11beta drivers
@Unia: good catch
@lordheavy: shouldn't 12.10 got 'xorg-server<1.13.0' in deps?

hi, after quite a long time with the open driver and since the catalyst came back to the official repositories, i tried to use it again. However, while i am following all the instructions from the wiki, i cannot make it work and i cannot understand why. When i am trying to load gdm manually i am dropping into the fallback mode of gnome.
Then i am running fglrxinfo from the terminal and i am getting the following:
X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 153 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
Serial number of failed request: 12
Current serial number in output stream: 12
so apparently i do not have any rendering or whatever......
my system is using the catalyst-dkms driver from the official repositories, it has a hd 5850 graphics card, systemd 194-4, xorg-server 1.13.0-3 installed, i tried to use the catalyst driver from the catalyst repository as well but the result is the same.
does someone have any idea, because i am trying from yesterday night to figure out what i am missing, but no result.
thanks in advance :-)

What version of catalyst did you install? 12.9 and 12.11 are compatible with Xorg 1.13 - 12.10 is not and you'll have to downgrade to Xorg 1.12 with the [xorg112] repo (see Wiki)

Just making clear. Are there any errors in the logs?

the error.log, dmesg.log, Xorg.0.log seem to be clear.....:-(

I had the same issue too. Most likely the same as this guy:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 1#p1174581
Switching to catalyst-hook from Vi0L0s repo solved it for me.

problem solved, for some reason it was creating the fglrx module for the linux-lts kernel that i had in my system and not for the current one.
After i uninstalled the lts-kernel and reinstalled the catalyst packages everything works fluently.
thanks for the help guys.... ;-)

I'm using hd234k repo and now the driver doesn't work with the latest kernel. What can I do ? Currently I'm using VESA fallback but I want to play games...

Hi
Today update from catalyst-generator (12.9-1 -> 12.11-1), linux and linux-headers (3.6.2-1 -> 3.6.3-1). After catalyst_build_module and sudo modprobe fglrx, Xorg crashed. I return under catalyst-generator 12.9-1 with success

Same here with catalyst-hook.

^^ i will look at it later, after getting back from work (8h) though it was working fine for me yesterday
Edit: is it rendering any errors while compilation?

Nope, no errors in my case. Recompiling went without errors but didn't help.

I cannot test it atm, could be my fault off course, but quick search is showing that 3.6.3 and 3.6.2 got a bug in ext4.
This is just a shoot in the dark, will investigate it later.

Go, go, go. Faster Vi0L0. Official Steam Linux Beta group opened up (and filled with Arch and Ubuntu users) and we need that fix.
(okay, sorry, only wanted to tell you guys, that there is an official Steam Linux Beta group, but still be slightly on topic...)

I'm having the same problems with catalyst-total, but manually unloading and reloading the fglrx module seems to temporarily fix things. After that X works fine for me.
Hope this helps anyone until someone smarter than me can figure out what is actually causing this.

I removed catalyst and installed catalyst-hook instead of it. Then recompiled the module for the current kernel and it worked. Also I had some problem with loading fglrx module on systemD (there was an error message but catalyst driver worked) which is now gone. Thanks to catalyst-hook. I am going to get a new PC soon and I think I prefer nVidia over than ATI.

There is no bug
just that kernel' module built on 3.6.2 is not compatible with 3.6.3 kernel
For me everything is working fine (as expected). On x86_64 i've tested -generator -hook and catalyst (for [catalyst] built on 3.6.3 kernel, i will update [catalyst-hd234k] soon) downgrading and upgrading from 3.6.2 to 3.6.3 and vice versa.
I guess that -generator users have made a little mistake, let's play Sherlock Holmes then
ie. you are using 3.6.2, then updated linux and linux-headers to 3.6.3 typed catalyst_build_module, and it build module for 3.6.2 kernel, because when you are running catalyst_build_module without argument it will build module for kernel that's currently running (for `uname -r` kernel - so 3.6.2), then rebooted and bam! fglrx error because it's not compatible with 3.6.3
Then i guessed you though something like "wtf?! not working! let's downgrade to 12.9. Then you downgraded, ran catalyst_build_module (now after reboot you are running 3.6.3, so it will build module for it) and tadaaam! it's working
Am i right?
TIP: if you want to build fglrx module for just installed kernel easiest way is to use:
catalyst_build_module all
and that will make magic, will build modules for all installed kernels (so also for 3.6.3 in our example).
@PhotonX:
i only don't know how you hacked -hook :>
did you install -hook after updating kernel and before reboot?
I'm having the same problems with catalyst-total, but manually unloading and reloading the fglrx module seems to temporarily fix things. After that X and xfce work fine, but GDM is still having some problems.
Hope this helps anyone until someone smarter than me can figure out what is actually causing this.
Wait, you need to unload and reload fglrx to start X? even after reboot? if yes - rebuild fglrx

That usually is the case. But since I've had that problem before I always use catalyst_build_module with (the exact) arguments, so 3.6.3-1-ARCH in my case. It also doesn't explain why catalyst-hook and -total are having the same problems, since we've got the hook scripts to do the work for us, so what are we supposed to do?
Edit: Sorry, didn't see your updated reply, I'll get back to you once I've rebuilt it.
Edit 2: Rebuild didn't help. Didn't throw any errors while building (neither did the second time) but I still need to reload the module if I want X to work. Xorg.log is pretty much identical to pierrebe's.

strange, strange, strange... what will this cmd return?:
modinfo fglrx | grep verma

What about:
catalyst_build_module remove_all
catalyst_build_module all
pierrebe's log is saying:
[ 21.319] (WW) fglrx(0): Kernel Module version does *not* match driver.
[ 21.319] (EE) fglrx(0): incompatible kernel module detected - HW accelerated OpenGL will not work
probably fglrx was build for 3.6.2 and then 3.6.3 was booted
Edit: just testing -total, but it's also working here besides that : there were no new files since 12.9 ubu, it's almost same PKGBUILD and same compilation, it just has to work...
Edit2: just curious: will it work for you on other kernel, like linux-lts?

Yes! linux-lts does work without having to reload the module. Sorry it took a while, I had to install LTS first .
