Re: b43 firmware my wireless won't work please help

eh ... you'll probably be much more likely to get help if you actually provide some information about your wirelesss card.  If you don't know which information is relevant, first read the wireless page on the wiki.

Re: b43 firmware my wireless won't work please help

lspci | grep -i net

01:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01)
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller

So I downloaded b43 firmware and that did nothing

Re: b43 firmware my wireless won't work please help

lspci -vnn | grep 14e4:

Then, after you have actually read that wiki page, and followed the steps therein, come back with what steps you have taken, and what the results were.

Re: b43 firmware my wireless won't work please help

I went ahead and closed and binned the other thread.  This one seemed to have the traction.

Can you post the output of dmesg | grep b43 and of lsmod
??

Re: b43 firmware my wireless won't work please help

Oh dear.  That's all wrong.

READ the broadcom wiki page.  The read it again.  And again.  Then follow it.

At some point it would be worthwhile to read the pacman wiki page to, but that is a bit of a different issue.

Some points you should get from the wiki page: which packages to install (one from the repos, one from the aur, ZERO manually installed, definitely zero installed the way you just attempted, you'll probably want to clean that up and hope the makefile has a good uninstall directive); which modules to load; which modules to blacklist.

EDIT: please use code tags for the output of commands.

I went to the wiki, it told me to
dmesg | grep firmware

which directed me to that site which gave me those instructions

Re: b43 firmware my wireless won't work please help

Yeah.

As Trilby points out, you need to install from the AUR -- don't do a make by hand unless you know exactly what you are doing.  It looks like your mistake was using 'make' instead of 'makepkg'

The dmesg output shows you do need the firmware.
I suggest you use the b43 driver (as you read the Broadcom Wiki)
After the firmware in installed, you need to reload the b43 module.  It is probably best if you just reboot.

I'll pick this up after my commute home.

Re: b43 firmware my wireless won't work please help

So does that response! wink

Excuse any earlier abruptness.  I can imagine it'd be confusing if you hadn't found the arch wiki yet.  Many skilled people put in a good bit of time making the archlinux wiki one of the best information sources on the web.  It is generally expected that archers will check there first for info and post in the forums if/when they have a problem applying the information available in the wiki.

Do let us know if/when you run into problems following those directions, and then hopefully you'll find the forum exchanges to be much more useful.

This is directly after installing b43 firmware from the AUR
(following the broadcom page and not the beginners guide)

The broadcom page also says that I might have to add some modules to /etc/rc.conf
but when i look there, all I see is a blank page.
nano /etc/rc.conf
brings up a blank slate....

Re: b43 firmware my wireless won't work please help

My ethernet cable at home is too fat to fit into this netbook so I have to get wireless running at school before heading home.
Looks like it won't be possible tonight. I think I'll reinstall mint and try a fresh install tomorrow.
Should I post back in this thread when I encounter this driver issue? or start a new one?

Re: b43 firmware my wireless won't work please help

Post back here since it is basically the same issue.

If you've just installed, you probably don't have /etc/rc.conf because you are using the new boot mechanism.

Are you sure that the wl module is the one you need (rather than b43), say?

After installing the packages, try just rebooting - it will be easier than figuring out what to remove and what to load. The system may just find what it needs automatically on boot.

Also, you will get the best help if you explain exactly what you did. Not just "following the instructions on the wiki": which instructions? The broadcom wireless page explains how to install a things for a variety of different hardware and the instructions differ in different cases. So post enough information to show why you used a particular set of instructions, exactly how you followed those instructions (commands, output) and what your results were.

EDIT: I checked the list and you need the b43. wl is listed as an alternative but b43 is the main driver supporting your card (according to the list of supported devices and the output you posted above). Since you've already installed the packages, just reboot and hopefully the system will find the right module automatically.

Re: b43 firmware my wireless won't work please help

I have that chip and b43 is the best choice (IMHO).  I think cfr has it correct, just reboot.

Re: b43 firmware my wireless won't work please help

Hey, thanks again for the help yesterday. I did a fresh install today and I have my drivers running FINALLY. I know it's working because that little orange light is finally blue.
However I still cannot connect to the internet through a wireless connection. I'm almost positive this is due to the lack of a wireless manager but when I go to the wiki page for wicd it seems to only have instructions for the rc.conf way of doing things, I have systemd.
So I looked into network manager instead and they do have the instructions for the new systemd setup; however, it requires me to know my localdomain and i have no idea how to determine this information.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, or any suggestions for a different way of connecting.

Re: b43 firmware my wireless won't work please help

before i had the firmware it wouldn't return the information after wlan0

[steve@ARCH ~]$ iwconfig
wlan0     IEEE 802.11bg  ESSID:off/any
          Mode:Managed  Access Point: Not-Associated   Tx-Power=0 dBm
          Retry  long limit:7   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:on

lo        no wireless extensions.

eth0      no wireless extensions.

[steve@ARCH ~]$ sudo su
[sudo] password for steve:
[root@ARCH steve]# ip link set wlan0 up

^^ this makes the blue light on my wireless button turn on indicating that it is finally on
I have to do this every startup to get the wireless button to come on, it won't work with the simple switch like it used to.
So I know that I finally got the wireless card running but how do I get it to connect?

[root@ARCH steve]# dhcpcd
dhcpcd[515]: version 5.6.2 starting
dhcpcd[515]: no interfaces have a carrier
dhcpcd[515]: forked to background, child pid 537

also wicd says it detects no networks when there are multiple networks here

stephenm409, please do not cross post - you just posted this exact same thing in another thread I just responded to.

So far you have been directed to the wiki pages, which you do not show any sign of having read, you have not used [ code ] tags as previously requested, and you are cross posting in multiple threads.  I strongly urge you to take some time to read the forum rules/guidelines (really read ... and apply them) if you hope to have productive exchanges on these forums.

stephenm409, do not cross-post, that's against the forum etiquette (look it up).
