Kernel panic after bootup on kernel 3.6.3-1

Hi,

I wasn't around for a couple of days and just did a 'pacman -Syu', which took my kernel from 3.5.5-1 to 3.6.3-1. This had the unpleasent effect, that a few seconds after X starts everything dies in a kernel panic. Fortunately I could reboot using the fallback entry in grub. I then downgraded back to kernel 3.5.5-1, which solved the problem (well, at least the machine has been stable for the last hour; I'm currently writing the post on it).

Here is an---admittedly crappy---picture of the output of the kernel panic. Can anyone point me to what might be the reason for the Kernel panic? The output does not leave me any wiser.

This is the log from pacman.log:

Re: Kernel panic after bootup on kernel 3.6.3-1

I have the same kernel panic after upgrading today, which included Linux 3.6.4 and a lot of gnome 3.4 to 3.6 (like gdm 4.3.1 to gdm 3.6.1).

I get the following right after gdm starts:

BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0000000000000019
e1000e 0000:00:19.0: irq 45 for MSI/MSI-X
IP: [<fffffff....>] smp_irq_move_cleanup_interrupt+0xb0/0x130
PGD 0
Oops: 0000 [#1] PREEMPT SMP

The calltrace also begins with the same thing:

intel_idle+0xf0/0x150
intel_idle+0xce/0x150

If I disable gdm and start it manually there is no kernel panic. I have also managed to boot into gdm without any kernel panic which seems to happen when there is a longer delay between vconsole and gdm in the boot process. However when gnome-shell finally starts everything is broken, but I guess that has to do with the gnome upgrades and not the kernel.

Re: Kernel panic after bootup on kernel 3.6.3-1

A friend of mine dug around a bit and unearthed this Bugreport in the Red Hat bugtracker and this Mail from the LKML.

Re: Kernel panic after bootup on kernel 3.6.3-1

I don't see how this is a duplicate; I think it is just a different Kernel panic in the same Kernel.

Re: Kernel panic after bootup on kernel 3.6.3-1

The problem seems to be fixed in Kernel 3.6.5. At least I am running my system without problems now. I have not tested Kernel 3.6.4, so it might have been fixed even then.
