[Solved] Unable to startx after update

Hi,
I am running openbox on an intel chip inside my X60 thinkpad.
I did an upgrade recently which included the following:

[2012-10-29 16:36] upgraded acpid (2.0.17-1 -> 2.0.17-3)
...
[2012-10-29 16:37] upgraded intel-dri (8.0.4-3 -> 9.0-1)
...
[2012-10-29 16:39] upgraded mkinitcpio (0.10-1 -> 0.11.0-1)
[2012-10-29 16:39] upgraded linux (3.5.6-1 -> 3.6.3-1)
[2012-10-29 16:40] upgraded linux-headers (3.5.6-1 -> 3.6.3-1)
...
[2012-10-29 16:42] upgraded xf86-video-geode (2.11.13-1 -> 2.11.13-2)
[2012-10-29 16:42] upgraded xf86-video-intel (2.20.9-1 -> 2.20.12-1)
[2012-10-29 16:42] upgraded xf86-video-vesa (2.3.2-1 -> 2.3.2-2)
[2012-10-29 16:42] upgraded xorg-server-common (1.12.4-1 -> 1.13.0-3)
[2012-10-29 16:42] upgraded xorg-server (1.12.4-1 -> 1.13.0-3)

On rebooting I get

acpid: client 2869[0:0] has disconnected
acpid: client connected from 2879[0:0]
acpid: 1 client rule loaded
//repeated with increasing numbers
INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

Trying startx yields

Have you tried without nomodeset?

Re: [Solved] Unable to startx after update

Wow, that was easy. Could have thought of that on my own. Some problems remain, but this one is solved. Thanks a lot!

Re: [Solved] Unable to startx after update

I'm experiencing a similar issue on two boxes (both Intel graphics) after upgrading yesterday. There were a heap of updates to Gnome packages, although XFCE is my DE.

I get the message "INIT: Id 'x' respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes".

I tried adding "nomodeset" at boot, but it didn't help.

Any suggestions?
