LXDE, LXDM problems after upgrade

Hello,
after the last upgrade, I encoutered the usual problems: no startx, no permissions to mount usb drives (operation not permitted) , lxde-logout incomplete and I get the message "not authorized".
I have fixed the startx issue, but the rest is not working, even after installing systemd-sysvcompat and updating my ~/.xinitrc to:

#exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch startlxde

if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
  for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
  done
  unset f
fi

/usr/lib/polkit-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 &
exec startlxde --with-ck-launch

I could not figure how to get it working, and I do not have time for this right now. All help is appreciated, thanks.

Re: LXDE, LXDM problems after upgrade

I only have "exec startlxde" in .xinitrc and it is fine.

Does loginctl show an active session?

Re: LXDE, LXDM problems after upgrade

$ loginctl show-session $XDG_SESSION_ID

Also, past the contents of your .xserverrc (if you have one).

Your title says LXDM, but in your post you say you fixed the startx issue.  What is it that you actually use?

Re: LXDE, LXDM problems after upgrade

@loafer:
[god@hal ~]$ loginctl
   SESSION        UID USER             SEAT
         1          0 root             seat0

1 sessions listed.
@WonderWoofy:
I simply added lxdm to the DAEMONS in rc.conf. loginctl show-session $XDG_SESSION_ID outputs:
Id=1
Timestamp=Thu, 2012-11-01 13:47:09 CET
TimestampMonotonic=10606855
DefaultControlGroup=name=systemd:/user/root/1
VTNr=1
TTY=tty1
Remote=no
Service=login
Leader=302
Audit=1
Type=tty
Class=user
Active=no
State=online
KillProcesses=no
IdleHint=yes
IdleSinceHint=1351774032026321
IdleSinceHintMonotonic=0
Name=root
I have no .xserverrc.

Re: LXDE, LXDM problems after upgrade

why would you add lxdm to the DAEMONS array? I know you said you installed systemd-sysvcompat, but did you actually reboot, i.e. are you booting with systemd?

Re: LXDE, LXDM problems after upgrade

I read in another forum post, that adding the login manager to rc.conf solved the problem. I do not know how to boot with systemd.

Re: LXDE, LXDM problems after upgrade

Just reboot as installing systemd-sysvcompat resulted in th removal of initscripts et al.  In fact to should not have a rc.conf at all now.

Re: LXDE, LXDM problems after upgrade

I did not quite understand what I should do. Also, where do I put the settings I have in my rc.conf if it is deprecated ?

I will take a look as soon as I have time, but this is exatcly what I meant when I said in the beginning that I am asking for help because of the lack of time to fix it myself...

Re: LXDE, LXDM problems after upgrade

This is a distribution that requires some maintenence from the user.  If you have too little time to take care of your system, then this may not be the right operating system for you.

Also, there is no hand holding around here.  If you want others to solve your problems for you, you may want to take a look at Ubuntu and Ubuntu based distributions, as they will take to statements like "I am asking for help because of the lack of time to fix it myself..." a bit more kindly.  Honestly, that just pisses me off.

Re: LXDE, LXDM problems after upgrade

Ok, first of all, my situation is preliminary, it will change with the end of the term. The system does require maintenance, and Im ok with it, but having to intervene and spend hours figuring out why your system does not boot every month, as it has been now, is not normal. First there was glibc, then fontconfig, consolekit, the 3.6 kernel not working with sandybrigde properly, now systemd.
All I ask is for users having dealt with the problem, which, judging by the amount of threads on this, is quite a common one, to tell me how they did it, not "solve my problems".
Thanks

Re: LXDE, LXDM problems after upgrade

If I understand you correctly, you can now start LXDE with startx, and the only things that are not working are automounting and LXDE-logout. Until you have time to read the many threads on this issue and read the systemd wiki topic, you can mount USB drives with "sudo mount" or install the pmount package and use it to mount as a normal user. You can shut down or reboot with "systemctl poweroff" and "systemctl reboot" (or "sudo shutdown -h now" and "sudo shutdown -r now").

Re: LXDE, LXDM problems after upgrade

Thanks, the thing is: I DID read through the first results that came up on google search, but none of the suggested solutions so far has worked for me. Also, I have now completely switched to systemd.

When you have already tried things and found that they don't work, it's very useful if you give us that information. We don't like guessing. If you've completely switched to systemd and LXDE is still not working, I have no solution other than the manual workarounds in my last post. Personally, I think automounting is overrated, and I always shut down manually.

Re: LXDE, LXDM problems after upgrade

I tried adding /usr/lib/polkit-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 & to my autostart configs and to.xinitrc. I added the .pkla files as described in the Wiki on PolicyKit. I also tried starting with gdm and in gnome, automount did work.
Is it possible lxdm fails to start policykit ?

Re: LXDE, LXDM problems after upgrade

I installed Arch with LXDE on Virtualbox and ran into a similar issue. The mounting started to work once i installed gvfs, but lxsession still refuses to show the "Shutdown" button. Logind is working properly, and i can shutdown from LXDM and typing "reboot" or "poweroff" in lxterminal. I've noticed that logout app gives these warnings:

kaszak@localhost ~ % lxde-logout

Re: LXDE, LXDM problems after upgrade

To shutdown and reboot from the menu requires consolekit from what I can tell and consolekit is no longer in the repos.  It seems to be as simple as that.

Re: LXDE, LXDM problems after upgrade

I just read on the wiki that the output of:
loginctl show-session $XDG_SESSION_ID
should contain:
Remote=no and Active=yes
Mine does not and the wiki reference did not give me any clue as to how to fix this.

Re: LXDE, LXDM problems after upgrade

Are you using LXDM or startx, plus do you always login as root?

Re: LXDE, LXDM problems after upgrade

I am using lxdm and I am not root, I do not know why loginctl said that I am. I must have run it with sudo..
I found this: http://forum.lxde.org/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=1422 which answers quite a few questions.

Re: LXDE, LXDM problems after upgrade

Does your X session open on the right tty?
I'm experiencing similar problems as you and it seems X opens on tty2 instead of tty1, from which I log in.

Re: LXDE, LXDM problems after upgrade

Yes, I am in tty1.
I found a temporary workaround: I reinstalled consolekit and followed https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=147913&p=2
I just hope someone will find a real solution with polkit soon.
