Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

[catalyst-12.10]
the repo is alive, you can use it in same way like [catalyst] archive repositories, so by adding number to the name of the repo in pacman.conf (Server address is the same) like:

[catalyst-<number>]
Server = http://catalyst.apocalypsus.net/repo/catalyst/$arch

ie.

[catalyst-12.10]
Server = http://catalyst.apocalypsus.net/repo/catalyst/$arch

Note: normally i'm not updating archive repos, but i will if someone will ask for it
Note2: used PKGBUILDs are here

I had the same f****g problem. I barely slept. :-)
This morning, I had to update to catalyst-utils-pxp, the legacy catalyst-utils was not updated to 12.11. Bummer. It took the night to figure out.
*edit* : my mistake, it's updated but not found. May have to do with yaourt. But pacman cannot find it either...

Wait wait wait, wha? AFAIK there's no legacy 12.11.
Legacy's -pxp in version 12.6 is available @ [catalyst-hd234k] repo

Sorry, by legacy, I meant the catalyst-utils "not pxp". Now everything came back to normal. I don't know why neither pacman nor yaourt didn't want to update my package.
That's in the past now.

Once it works, don't touch anything !

Is there a way to run proprietary AMD driver only for OpenCL alongside intel-dri with hybrid graphics? Currently I have installed open intel and ati drivers with vgaswitcheroo to turn off discrete gpu at boot. However, I'd like to be able to use the discrete gpu for opencl apps (and power it off when not needed to save power). Is this possible? I've tried to install amdstream and catalyst, but it conflicts with intel-dri (requires certain libgl version). Forcing the install broke the system (blank screen when starting X, can switch to tty but screen remains black; had to type cmds blindly). Thanks.

Use catalyst-total-pxp @ AUR or catalyst-utils-pxp (eventually with lib32-catalyst-utils-pxp) @ [catalyst] repo.

To switch to intel read our latest talk with ungaminga.

IIRC using one gpu to render X while other to work on opencl is hard to achieve with powerXpress (if not possible at all, though i'm no expert here), but whith -pxp you will be at least able to perform a fast switch between gpus.

Installed pxp drivers, downgraded xorg. Xorg segfaults, black screen, need to blindly log in to tty1 and reboot/press control-alt-del. Tried to remove intel drivers and leave only catalyst (this time without pxp), but to no avail. When booting without nomodeset, xorg still segfaults, but I can at least see the TTY. Guess I'll stay with intel and do opencl on Windows... -.-"

Also, noticed this error when loading kernel:

[drm:drm_fill_in_dev] *ERROR* Cannot initialize the agpgart module.
DRM: Fill_in_dev failed.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi,
I've got a problem with my Radeon HD 4670. I'm using catalyst-hd234k/catalyst-generator 12.6-5. I'm encountering the following issues (please note that when referring to Flash Player video performance, I have only really tested Youtube):

  • Poor Flash Player performance - 1080p video is very choppy and makes Flash Player respond very slowly. Edit: Fixed by installing chromium-pepper-flash-stable.

  • When switching a video to fullscreen, Flash Player is very unresponsive (response to ESC or SPACE takes ages), tearing is very apparent even though the driver is set in a way that should eliminate any tearing (and it actually does - apart from Flash Player). Note that these issues are present on video all video resolutions my PC can handle - from 240p to 1080p. Edit: Fixed by installing chromium-pepper-flash-stable.

  • While running a compositor (tested with xcompmgr, compton and unagi) and simultaneously having open a maximized (I can see my top panel) or fullscreen (the window covers everything) terminal window (rxvt-unicode), the terminal performance becomes very poor (especially with a lot of text displayed). But if I open a second window on the same desktop, the problem goes away. Note that I use a bitmap font so there isn't a reason for low performance. I use Awesome as my window manager. Edit: Fixed by using the unagi compositor.

There are more issues in the AMD driver, but the ones I have pointed out are unique in one way (apart from that they are extremely annoying) - they have appeared suddenly and with no apparent reason. I used to have no problems with playing 1080p videos in fullscreen or running a compositor, while having a single terminal window open. The issues first started about one or two months ago, I soon noticed that the issues appeared after resuming from suspend with an active compositor (or something like that). After the issues appeared, they could only be solved by rebooting - killing the compositor or restarting  X didn't help (only for the terminal issue, killing the compositor fixed it, but the issue was back after re-enabling the compositor). After that, the issues disappeared only to come back after a certain time and disappear again. Now after a relatively long pause the issues have come back and are more annoying than ever - I don't even have to run a compositor for the issues to appear (apart from the maximized terminal issue). I've unsuccessfully tried to find the origin of the issue by booting up with a bare minimum of applications only necessary for checking, if the bug was still present. I also failed to find any evident information in the logs to help solve the issues. Because I have excluded most of the other applications on my system as the possible sources of the issues and because the AMD driver is so buggy, I'm assuming that the AMD driver is the culprit of these issues. Does anyone know what could be causing these issues and how to solve them? The only extra information I can provide is that I'm currently on linux-lts 3.0.48-1, some possibly related lines from /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

[ 18.057] (WW) Falling back to old probe method for fglrx

I have similar problems with an HD3400 on I3 also using the catalyst driver. Back when I still had KDE+Open Source driver I didn't have those issues but I'm not sure if the change from KDE to I3 or the driver change is the reason behind it is the problem.

Those issues appear to be limited to Firefox only. When using Chromium with chromium-pepper-flash from the AUR there aren't any issues. AFAIK the chromium-pepper-flash is based on flash 11.4 while the firefox one is 11.2+security fixes.

Yes! Installing chromium-pepper-flash-stable fixed the flash player issues. Thanks!

But I still don't know how to fix the issues with the compositor.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Is video acceleration broken for someone else? I get only a black window and this:

[vo_vaapi] vaPutSurface(): resource allocation failed
A: 1.9 V: 1.9 A-V: 0.000 ct: 0.041 0/ 0 6% 7% 1.2% 1 0

I tried everything but couldn't get it to work. Any ideas for me?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Wine and 12.11 beta

Well... that was interesting. Having reverted back to 12.8 (from the 12.9 beta), and having to downgrade Xorg, I didn't hold out much hope for 12.11b. So little in fact that I had already downloaded the packages from Vi0L0's 12-10 repo before even trying.

What happened? Well firstly I installed catalyst-total, upgrading the driver to 12.11b, and rebooted. I then proceeded to test some Wine apps (expecting the mess I encountered before) and, well, everything worked fine smile

I then proceeded to update Xorg to 1.13 (thinking for sure that this would screw things up) and reboot again. Nope, everything working as it should, apps, games, the lot!

Games tested: DA2, Witcher2, Maj2, DA... Dragon Age is actually running better than before - previously the wineserver process would go 100% CPU and the game would stutter every few seconds. Now it's hovering around the 60% mark!

Can I propose we freeze Archlinux now and never update anything again?? tongue

Haha I'm following this topic and this really made me laugh big_smile backup the repo and you have it. I did the same thing for 12.4 release of my gfx drivers and some older Xorg and I'm using those. Also, there is something called Arch Rollback Machine

Well, if it's any help, I bit the bullet and bought a 6670, dumped the hd234k repo and upgraded catalyst to 12.11 and xorg to 1.13. Trackmania still plays well here, and the heaven benchmark is very nice to watch:)

But, I recently reinstalled arch, installed xorg112 and catalyst 12.10, as I had before, but for some reason glxgears dropped from 4k fps to 2k fps, strange!

I took a noticeable performance hit on games when upgraded to catalyst 12.11 on xorg 1.13, so I reverted to 12.9 and everything's good again.

BTW, thanks for the repo Vi0L0!

Yeah, I was getting crashes in Minecraft whenever I entered a certain part of the world so I figured I'd go latest with everything and try, but no luck. FPS in-game isn't too bad, but I think there's definitely a reduction in performance.

Are you sure it doesn't work. It can take a while to initialise and looks like a freeze. Even on my HD6670 it takes a while before it starts.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi Vi0l0,
I've a Dell Inspiron 15R SE (with a 7730M hybrid muxless switch and intel hd4000).
With ubuntu 12.04 proprietary catalyst works just fine, but in arch there's no way to make it work.
Trying to install your package, at the next reboot kdm doesn't start, and system hangs up.
At the end of boot process, when I should login in,  It says something like "restaring x too many times" on the black screen, and the sistem hangs up. No tty works.

Any suggestion?

Tnx,
HS

That's cause it's a beta. See:
