Is there some way to install Arch on an xbox?

I'd like to use my mythtv packages on an xbox to make another frontend, but I'm unsure of how to go about installing AL.

I know there are debian and redhat ports to the xbox, but I really can't stand those distros. tongue

Has anybody attempted xbox installation before?

IIRC, an xbox runs with a PIII processor and so should be be able to run Arch Linux. Wish I knew enough about the xbox BIOS to tell you how to get it to boot an install cd.

...yeah, I wasn't really worried about the actual CPU architecture, just everything else. smile

My suggestion would be to checkout the Xbox Linux site and perhaps poke around their wiki/mailing lists.  I bet they've got pretty good records of hardware requirements and could help getting all of that working, once you have a base Arch setup...

Re: Is there some way to install Arch on an xbox?

I'll drag this topic back up as i'm getting an xbox and modchip tomorrow and was wondering the same thing. kleptophobiac did you get arch to install on the xbox?
Is there any interest in getting an arch xbox installation going?

I just searched google and almost all distros have an xbox port now. but i also can't stand any of the other xbox distros package management or initscripts.

Yeah... I've ceased to care. If someone cooks up an arch xbox distro, I'll be pleased to test it. XBMC, however, has done everything I wanted arch and mythtv to do.

Re: Is there some way to install Arch on an xbox?

I agree, xbmc kicks ass, but an arch/archie xbox would be pretty easy to make after i read some docs. my xbox is out of service right now because i realized too late that the rtc only lasts 3 hours when i upgraded the harddrive. easy fix though.

I think an archie xbox cd that can install to hd would be the best solution though.

Re: Is there some way to install Arch on an xbox?

i'd be interested in getting arch running on my xbox... i really should make the effort as i've had it running on pretty much all my other stuff (including my phone!!)

what's the consensus on how hard it would be to do?

(BTW i haven't put any other flavour of linux on it so am a complete beginner to linux on xbox!!)

Re: Is there some way to install Arch on an xbox?

I hava a XBOX running Xebian , installed natively on G: drive.

I think I'll try to install ArchLinux following this tutorial: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … her_distro

starting from a Xebian live cd.

I'll replace the kernel with a kernel24-2.4.32-xbox already compiled with xbox patches.

I'll let you know if it works.

Re: Is there some way to install Arch on an xbox?

Hi,

I had been running ArchLinux on XBOX (dual boot, softmodded XBOX) till yesterday.

The problem is Arch is not supporting kernel 2.4 series anymore. If you want to be able to read the fatx partition, you can't use kernel 2.6.

I replaced the original XBOX HD with a 160GB. The last 20 GB are dedicated to the linux distro, which now is Xebian (debian derivated).

Hope it helps....

Re: Is there some way to install Arch on an xbox?

http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/Making_a … ible_HOWTO

But as already mentioned, Arch does not support kernel 2.4 which is needed to run a dualboot XBOX, cause the FATX driver does not work with kernel 2.6...

On a "Linux-only" XBox kernel 2.6 should work, cause FATX is not needed.

I don't know if there is a working FATX driver for kernel 2.6 today, so if I am wrong, correct me, please wink
