Gnome 3.6 broken. Can't log in.

Since the latest updates to Gnome 3.6, I haven't been able to log in to it even once. I always get the "Oh no, something has gone wrong!" message.

I added the systemd line to grub and it is definitely using systemd. I also removed my extensions folder in case one of them was causing trouble. I do still have initscripts installed, but I tried with it uninstalled and got the same result. I've tried logging in with slim, GDM and just plain using startx. Same result every time.

This is what startx > logfile gave me

KDE actually works fine, so I can at least use it to try some fixes.

I had a look through pacman.log in case there were any obvious problems during the upgrade. This is all I found -

[2012-10-31 05:57] >>> Use polkit to grant access.
[2012-10-31 05:57] >>> ...or change the access model in /etc/libvirt/libvirtd.conf.
[2012-10-31 05:57] >>> (see unixperms.patch in PKGBUILD for help)
[2012-10-31 05:57]
[2012-10-31 05:57] >>> To finish the upgrade, restart libvirtd by running the command:
[2012-10-31 05:57] >>> '/etc/rc.d/libvirtd restart' as root or rebooting.
[2012-10-31 05:57] >>> You may also need to run 'rm -rf ~/.libvirt'

I'm not sure if it's relevant or what it means by "Use polkit to grant access.". Is this something I need to worry about?

Re: Gnome 3.6 broken. Can't log in.

I've found some log files that might have relevant information, and I can see what looks to be plenty of errors, but I can't figure out why they are happening.

Re: Gnome 3.6 broken. Can't log in.

Are you actually trying to start a GNOME session, or are you just using GDM? I found out that GDM can't start my Cinnamon 1.6.0-2 (going to upgrade it now and try again). If I switch session to GNOME in GDM however, it starts without errors.

Edit:
Can't even install the latest Cinnamon due to build errors (as already detailed in the AUR).

What are you talking about?  Give us a link or explain.  We all know that the AUR is, but how could someone know that something is "already detailed in the AUR"?  Where _exactly_ are you getting your information?

I'm having the same issue.
Gnome is b0rken.
Somehow I'm not surprised.
Good thing I can just use e17 instead.

I'm just trying to start Gnome from GDM. GDM starts fine.

I also have Cinnamon installed and that doesn't work anymore either.

Jeez. Since I was talking about Cinnamon, how about going to the details page for that? It's the second latest comment.

Re: Gnome 3.6 broken. Can't log in.

I had a similar problem today. I updated gnome from 3.4.2-1 to 3.6.1-1 overnight.

After I followed the instructions to properly integrate systemd it worked again:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Systemd

I followed everything on that page exactly and moved everything to pure systemd.

I'm still getting the same problems logging into Gnome.

Too many instructions!  But after following them, I can log into gnome again.

Don't forget this one:
systemctl enable gdm.service

The instructions were quite difficult to follow.  Especially the part where they tell you to start issuing "systemctl enable" commands before you boot using systemd.  But I've been told that I'm the only person that has ever had any diffuculty with a linux distro, so you won't have any problems.

Re: Gnome 3.6 broken. Can't log in.

Unfortunately I still cannot use gnome.
I have added systemd to grub.cfg and the login screen appears. It allows me to select the user I want to log in, type the password, use the fingerprint etc.
When I click to log in, my desktop appears, sometimes even gnome-do blinks, but after that the "something went wrong" appears...
I have created a new user to eliminate some custom themes, but exactly the same happens.

Any ideas?

Edit: I have configured the pure systemd and systemd seems to be working fine. However, I still can't log in.
When I'm trying to log in, I'm receiving:

WARNING: Failed to give slave programs access to the display. Trying to proceed.

This is visible in message.log and when I use

systemctl status gdm.service

Re: Gnome 3.6 broken. Can't log in.

I can't log to gnome but I receive no warnings or errors.
GDM start and I can login to xfce (but no gnome!)

Re: Gnome 3.6 broken. Can't log in.

Right, I can lig in as root to GNOME session, but not as my default user...

I read logs and enabled debugging to GDM, for me it fails when authorizing user ("systemctl status gdm" output):

gkr-pam: no password is available for user

The questions is if this is and gnome keyring or PAM issue? Any ideas

Re: Gnome 3.6 broken. Can't log in.

I have tried to log in as root and I'm getting the same message sad
Seems rather as gnome-related problem.

Re: Gnome 3.6 broken. Can't log in.

This issue is related to gnome keyring (at least for me). I found partial workaround, just recreate toy user account. Remember to backup your home directory and preserve UID/GID for your account.

Now I'm able to log in with GDM, but for example I don't see "Log out" option in menu...

The new account works for me, but how can I recreate my account without data loss?

If you set the same UID/GID for recreated account, just replace new home directory with backup home directory and it will work.

Re: Gnome 3.6 broken. Can't log in.

I'm having the same error of not being able to login after upgrade. Installed slim and enabled it for login but no luck, same sad smiley :-(

Any other way to get around this issue? Have already reinstalled twice, is there a fix for this issue without having to reinstall again?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Gnome 3.6 broken. Can't log in.

Here is how I fixed the "Oh no, something has gone wrong!" message after updating my system. I noticed that any new accounts I created did not have this issue only my existing account. I checked my login screen for my existing account and the session was set to cinnamon and not gnome. Setting it back to gnome allowed me to login again with my existing account.
