after installing catalyst Aticonfig --initial fails

It is a fresh installation. I just installed catalyst using pacman -S catalyst-dkms catalyst-utils and everything seems fine.

When I want to do "aticonfig --initial" it says:
Found fglrx primary device section
PowerXpress error: Cannot stat '/usr/lib64/fglrx': no such file or directory
Failed to initialize libglx for discrete GPU
Using /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Saving back-up....

The computer is a laptop dell inspiron 15r. The graphic card is ATI HD7700M

thank you!

Re: after installing catalyst Aticonfig --initial fails

packer -S [bold]catalyst[/bold] catalyst-utils

And I meant

pacman -S xf86-video-ati

as an alternative
apologies.

Re: after installing catalyst Aticonfig --initial fails

packer doesnt exist in my computer. If you meant pacman, there is no package called catalyst. catalyst-utils is already installed but aticonfig is not working

Re: after installing catalyst Aticonfig --initial fails

catalyst exists in the AUR (Arch User Repositories) and you will need an AUR package manager such as packer or yaourt, and I just found a pacaur I might checkout.

I believe this is your problem smile

Re: after installing catalyst Aticonfig --initial fails

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=142386

I have always run from clean setup

packer -S catalyst catalyst-utils
aticonfig --initial

as root, and added nomodeset to my boot parameters...

even thought it might download a 100mb package twice it has always worked...
I've never seen catalyst-dkms and I'm not sure if you are on a laptop or what the gpu is.

Also remove xf86-video-intel

Maybe clean it up and reinstall (like the link is suggesting).

Re: after installing catalyst Aticonfig --initial fails

Can you explain me how to add nomodeset?

Re: after installing catalyst Aticonfig --initial fails

in either
/boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg [syslinux]
/boot/grub/menu.1st [grub legacy]
/boot/grub/grub.cfg [grub2]

following your root device description
root = /dev/sdX#
you'll see 'ro'
add 'nomodeset'
so it looks like this

root = /dev/sdX# ro nomodeset .....etc

the drivers should load x without this option anyway.
good luck.

Re: after installing catalyst Aticonfig --initial fails

It is what I read to do

nomodeset

This is a kernel boot option that tells the kernel
not to enable kernel mode setting (KMS). Video
support is usually a combination of a drm kernel
driver and a Xorg driver working together. KMS is
used with Intel, Nouveau, and Radeon kernel
modules. KMS is required for Intel and Nouveau,
and optional for Radeon (although, with different features).

If you want to use the vesa Xorg driver, and you have
hardware that uses the Intel, Nouveau, or Radeon
kernel modules, you may need to boot with nomodeset,
or blacklist the matching module, or just delete the module.
The modules will be found in /lib/modules/<kernel-version>/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/.

Re: after installing catalyst Aticonfig --initial fails

I do not have any xinitrc in the home of the basic user.

the laptop is dell inspiron 15r. It has 2 cards, an intel and a AMD HD 7700m

(it is still not working)

Re: after installing catalyst Aticonfig --initial fails

make an ~/.xinitrc

exec ....

also I tried the new beta catalyst at http://aur.archlinux.org
it works, but I had to force it (missing headers).
If your having problems with catalyst you can always try xf86-video-ati.

Re: after installing catalyst Aticonfig --initial fails

As far as I know xf86-video-ati does not support my card (HD7700M).

By the way... nothing is working yet. I am giving up

Re: after installing catalyst Aticonfig --initial fails

Have the same issue (Dell inspiron 7520, Radeon HD 7730M). Laptop works somehow with intel-dri (xf86-video-intel), X shows errors asking me to intall vesa driver, but it works without it.
I had no success with catalyst 12.11 from testing, X requires intel driver

upd0.
I have success with catalyst-total-pxp from AUR, look at  "PowerXpress support" section  in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Catalyst

upd1
I have success only with intel drivers, fglrx falls down with segfault

Re: after installing catalyst Aticonfig --initial fails

Could it be that, after installing catalyst and catalyst-utils you didn't have kernel headers (its listed as optional) installed so fglrx build command quietly failed so you dont have fglrx module built. Hence the aticonfig is unable to find it?

Re: after installing catalyst Aticonfig --initial fails

finally I have success with my HD 7730M and catalyst
I had to downgrade xorg to 1.12 and install intel drivers as described in wiki  without disabling kms
