[SOLVED!] built-in volume buttons still don't work on lenovo t61

many months ago the volume buttons on my t61 laptop stopped working.  (i use gdm + openbox).  i think the failure started with the big gnome3 upgrade, but honestly i don't even remember anymore.  weird thing is, other buttons do work (e.g. the light and the brightness control up/dn).

after converting to systemd i thought the volume ctrls might start working again, just on a lark, but no dice.

i have the following pkgs installed:

tp_smapi 0.41-11
thinkfinger 0.3-6

i didn't have tp_smapi installed back when the buttons used to work, but i thought it couldn't hurt to try installing. 

all the modules are loaded and nothing seems amiss.  journalctl shows nothing when the buttons are pressed.  my user acct has a .Xmodmap file which has been there since 2008 and has not been touched:

keycode 234 = XF86Back
keycode 233 = XF86Forward
keycode 144 = XF86AudioPrev
keycode 164 = XF86AudioStop
keycode 162 = XF86AudioPlay
keycode 153 = XF86AudioNext
keycode 160 = XF86AudioMute
keycode 174 = XF86AudioLowerVolume
keycode 176 = XF86AudioRaiseVolume

anyone know how to get the volume buttons to come alive again?

See 3rd example under ALSA. That's how I got my R61's built-in volume buttons working when using Openbox.

samuvuo:  thanks so much!  i can't believe something actually worked.  the little gui interpretation of the volume change no longer shows up, but the volume actually adjusts again.

You can have notifications as well. I used libnotify + self made script first, then discovered xfce4-volumed (it's in AUR).
