After recent updates, Gnome freezes randomly. Video problem?

I've been having some problems lately that I didn't have before recent updates.

My desktop will freeze randomly and my only option is to switch to a VT and enter multi-user mode with `systemctl isolate multi-user.service`. X doesn't crash though. My Gnome Desktop just freezes entirely, but the mouse pointer continues to move around just fine. When I enter multi-user mode, Xorg.0.log says that the server exited successfully.

Below are error messages in dmesg, systemd journal, and Xorg.0.log.

# dmesg | grep -i error

Any idea what might be causing these freezes or what info I can further provide?

EDIT: Processes in X are apparently not crashing, only the video output is. For example, if I'm running applications with sound, I continue hearing sound though the graphics are completely frozen. Is there a way to refresh the graphics or video card somehow?

Did you try killing just gnome-shell from the terminal?

I forgot to mention I'm using Gnome Classic (Fallback) mode with Compiz so I edited my original post.

Re: After recent updates, Gnome freezes randomly. Video problem?

Just now, when freezing ocurred, I switched to a virtual terminal then killed compiz and gnome-panel, and when I switched back, my desktop was unfrozen! One of those is the cuplrit. I'll be back when I figure out for sure which one it is... (this might not be a kernel/hardware issue).

Re: After recent updates, Gnome freezes randomly. Video problem?

I'm experiencing the very same problem on both my machines: i'm running vanilla gnome-shell 3.6, no gnome classic, nvidia blob and latest updates.
In my case i'm able to switch to a VT and restart gdm, but this will last only some random time, then another freeze will follows and this time there is nothing i can do since everything is completely frozen so REISUB won't work either.
Don't know if this is related to video, but this never happened with gnome 3.4.

Re: After recent updates, Gnome freezes randomly. Video problem?

My crashes seem to be related to Compiz. I haven't experienced any crashes so far using Gnome Shell, Mutter, or Metacity. If I use Compiz, the desktop freezes some random time into the session. I'm going to see if I can get some output from Compiz.

Re: After recent updates, Gnome freezes randomly. Video problem?

I am having similar issue with gnome freezing randomly in a fresh install of 3.6.  For me it usually happens when moving the cursor to the upper left corner (activities) or even when using the "win" key.  while frozen i can move the cursor but I'm unable to exit without a hard reboot.  I just reinstalled Arch after having a 4+ year install, i figured it was due and things would run smoother.  I was wrong.  Funny thing is, I have an install of ubuntu12.10 and i run gnome-shell on it without any problems.  Usually its the other way around.
Any Help!

Re: After recent updates, Gnome freezes randomly. Video problem?

I have same problem after upgrade to GNOME 3.6.  I haven't noticed that going to activities with mouse or win key would cause it. And I don't use any compiz effects. For me it have happened only on battery power.

Btw. If using native gnome with gnome shell and you can get to VT, you can restart gnome by killing it. First find out PID of running gnome-shell process by:

ps -e | grep gnome-shell

And then kill process by (replace xxxx with PID number of your gnome-shell process):

sudo kill -HUP xxxx

Re: After recent updates, Gnome freezes randomly. Video problem?

This is still happening on one of my machines and, curiously, that machine is the one i'm using for developing a game so i'm basically using GL all the time and i initially thought that graphics was involved also by reading here that Compiz was somewhat related.
But then i read today's post (#8) from Jompu and i'm not sure if that is still the case: however, yesterday night that machine worked flawlessly without hiccups or hangs for the first time after the gnome shell 3.6 update, just updated everything and started working as always.
Hopefully everything will be fine tonight smile

Re: After recent updates, Gnome freezes randomly. Video problem?

Just an update: this weekend the machine i thought "stable" has frozen again, just while watching some videos from a fresh boot, so it looks like the problem is still there.

<edit>It could be interesting to add that just the screens (multihead setup here 1920x1080+1920x1080) frozen completely, both the mouse cursor,  RadioTray and VLC were still running fine in the background, as well as XChat</edit>

Re: After recent updates, Gnome freezes randomly. Video problem?

I just want to confirm, that you're not alone:

Since the upgrade to Gnome 3.6 I have the exact same problem like bmanuel described in #10.
Music is still playing, I can move the mouse, but nothing else is working. I can only switch to the console and kill X. The method of signalling gnome-shell to restart seems like a better idea, so I will try this.
This happens at least 2 times a day, sometimes even more often.

I didn't found anything worth to mention in my .xsession-errors file. Besides that:

dropbox: Fatal IO error 11 (resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.

But since this is related to Dropbox, I have not searched further for that …

Re: After recent updates, Gnome freezes randomly. Video problem?

I think i got my problem, but i don't know how to solve it: after much troubles i found out that whenever i have an SMB connection with a machine that then goes down/disconnect from network without me unmounting the share BEFORE it, then BOOM, everything freeze.
I noticed this only because i was sharing a directory with my brother and noticed i had the froze as soon as he got disconnected from the network: so i asked him to power on that machine and.. magic! My machine unfroze instantly!

But now, how to fix that?! Is it due to my /etc/fstab? Does this really matter with nemo/nautilus mounted shares? This, however, depicts the machine in question (the one that, disconnecting from the network, caused my own to freeze)

//themachine.local/shared /home/username/mountpoint/ cifs noauto,guest,username=myname,password=mypassword,uid=1000,gid=100 0 0

At last i found out what's my problem, hopefully your situation is similar so that we can work out a solution on this one.

Re: After recent updates, Gnome freezes randomly. Video problem?

It looks like i found a very similar problem on this thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=149294, but i don't have any of those listed extensions installed, but now that i think about it, i've the option "Show mounted volumes on the desktop" in the Tweak Tool->Desktop tool.. need to investigate more.

Re: After recent updates, Gnome freezes randomly. Video problem?

Today at work I looked into Gnome Tweak Tool. Even though I disabled showing nautilus/files on my desktop in general, the option "Show mounted volumes on the desktop" was set to "on". I disabled it and today I got only one time (compared to at least 2-3) a desktop freeze.

Thank you (Jompu) very much for the tip with restarting gnome-shell instead of killing whole X, now I can continue working without restarting all applications and stuff. This is making everything way less painful.

Tomorrow, I will disable all my shell extensions to find out, if there's a connection ...

Thanks for the tip with restarting only gnome-shell rather than X. I can reproduce this freeze everytime I check the "use system title bar" in chromium. Hope someone file a bug somewhere.

Re: After recent updates, Gnome freezes randomly. Video problem?

I was also used to sudo service restart gdm from a VT, but i noticed the next freeze will be harder than the first one, usually involving removing power or pressing the power on button for 3 seconds since even the Magic SysRq will not work anymore, so i usually reboot the machine.

Re: After recent updates, Gnome freezes randomly. Video problem?

Hmmmm.... Yeah, I've narrowed down my problem to Compiz. I've been using Mutter for the past week with no freezing, then I tried Compiz and it froze within an hour. I'm not exactly sure why it's freezing though. I know it's not samba like in bmanuel's case because I don't use samba. As for everyone else, it seems video related. I'll post back if I find more info.

Re: After recent updates, Gnome freezes randomly. Video problem?

Interesting, obviously we all have different causes for the freeze …

For me, it seems like one of the Gnome Shell extensions is to blame.
Yesterday I deactivated all of them: no freezes.
Today I activated some: no freezes.
Still some extensions to go … wink

I run compiz-standalone session, and like amadar's,it freezes within one hour at most. It started after last compiz update.

Re: After recent updates, Gnome freezes randomly. Video problem?

Hey all. I've confirmed that the problem is with Compiz, but I have also now confirmed more specifically that the problem is with Compiz + Radeon video cards. I believe Compiz is having problem with the Radeon card because I've gotten a new laptop that has an Intel HD 4000 video card and Compiz runs smoothly and does not crash at all.

The problem wasn't there not long before I opened this thread, so something has obviously changed with Compiz that is conflicting with Radeon. I've no idea what though.

Word of advice: Radeon video cards are notorious for having the worst driver support in Linux so make sure your system has an Nvidia or Intel video card instead.

I have this issue on Intel HD 3000 graphics (sandybridge). No compiz installed, just standard gnome composite manager (gnome-shell).

THANKS! I'm quite sure this is the reason gnome shell freezes for me as well. I was mounting my box.com cloud with this entry in /etc/fstab:

# box.com account
https://www.box.com/dav /home/abtz/Box davfs rw,user,noauto 0 0

If anyone has an idea for how to fix this, I'm all ears. For now, I'll just remove the entry from /etc/fstab.

I'm running vanilla Gnome, with only the Frippery shutdown menu and battery remaining extensions installed.

Nice i'm not the only one with vanilla Gnome, hopefully we'll rule out and pinpoint the problem OR gnome 3.8 will fix this?

If anyone is experiencing a freeze like this with gnome-shell and happens to have intel graphics this may fix it:

add i915.i915_enable_fbc=0 to your grub commandline (this only works with intel)

I was experiencing random freezes like this with gnome-shell and my intel HD4000 (desktop would totally freeze except I could still move mouse), but after adding that to grub its been smooth sailing.
