Hi.
After recent system updates with "pacman -Syu" various packages have broken.
For example chromium either crashes on start or does not load pages:
~ % chromium

Also kwrite crashes on start.
Also KDE plasma desktop does not start telling about KWin crashes.
Also Kile says "[PDFLaTeX] failed to start]" when I try to produce .pdf from .tex.
Here is my update log:

Are you running out of memory? Try "free -m" to see how much you have available.

No, I have 4 GB of RAM, and "free -m" reported that lots of it was free.
Also reboot does not help, these problems can be reproduced right after the reboot.

Did you see "Fontconfig 2.10.1 update - manual intervention required"

Thanks.
Yes, I followed the manual back then.
I have repeated these steps now, also deleted ~/.fonts.conf.
Still all of these issues do occur.

Unfortunately all of these issues still reproduce.
KDE can't launch (kwin crashes), kwrite crashes, chromium crashes and kile cannot launch pdflatex.

Are you running Arch on some kind of exotic hardware? (that includes laptops). The only thing I can see from your pacman log that's able to trigger the out of memory error when allocating memory or forking (which is what chromium does in this case, afaik), would be the kernel update.
You could try upgrading/reverting it, if all else fails. Have also a look at dmidecode output, dmesg and whatever is thrown to your system log, just in case. (for upgrading, I generally just get a kernel for testing - probably not the most recommendable thing, but psst, it works)

Turned out the the problem was in this:
[2012-11-05 02:19] upgraded qt (4.8.3-4 -> 4.8.3-5)
Downgraded qt to 4.8.3-4 and everything works fine again.
So this is a qt bug.
Offline
Considering how widely used qt is, don't you think everyone else who's using qt (meaning all KDE users and some others) would also be experiencing this?

I don't know, perhaps then it is my specific combination of qt 4.8.3-5 and other components (like kernel or nvidia driver or something else)?
Offline
Solved by reinstalling the system from scratch. No crashes yet.
