For some reason (perhaps this is another thread) my computer wouldn't shut down. Running "poweroff" or "shutdown -h now" resulted in the expected broadcast message, but nothing else.
So, yesterday, I had to just switch it off at the power button. When I rebooted I got a stack of error messages regarding modules. I realised that this was simply due to the fact that I hadn't run lilo since upgrading the kernel. So I did.
This time there were no error messages until I saw:
Warning: unable to open initial console
and then the computer rebooted. This then started a cycle of booting and rebooting until I switched it off again...
I'm assuming that I'll have to use some sort of live cd for this - but I have no idea what I might need to do when I'm booted into the live cd...

Well, if you think it might be in another thread then why don't you search first? You can rest assured that these things have been covered numerours times in the last month.

I meant that the issue about my pc not powering down might be another thread.
I did search and can only find that I might have to edit my lilo.conf, which I will try

post your lilo.conf / grub.conf
your problem is most likely related to the udev migration ?! Have you changed your links to /dev/hda (or similar) instead of /dev/discs/discX/partX

cool - I'll boot into a live cd tonight (at work right now) and run migrate-udev and, if necessary tweak my lilo.conf and fstab and post back with my results.
Thanks for all the help

Actually I did search and read carefully through all of the responses. At the time, however, I was getting confused between two of my machines - one of which has been using udev since the beginning and this one which (probably) has not...
So I didn't think that udev was the issue at the time - having thought it through I see that it probably is.
