I recently got two leftover computers that I've been combining in order to get something fairly nice to work with. Recently, however, firefox started to hard freeze the entire machine whenever it is launched, leaving only the shutdown button intact.
There's a risk that the computer is messed up hardwarewise, but I've run a memtest (for many cycles), without any problems.
Now, I'm wondering if anyone else has had anything similar to this. I'm just baffled that firefox can cause this.

I have no problems, and would doubt firefox had the power to do that.

Uhhh... What sort of machine is this?

The machine is a pentium4 1,5Ghz, with an (IIRC) nvidia geforce2 400. I guess it might be the nvidia drivers. I'm gonna try to change the video card to see if things get better.
But, yeah, it's pretty amazing. I can't say how many times I've seen the cursor hovering above the firefox icon, witnessing about my attempts to start the browser... but everything's frozen.

The render-accel option gives some problems with the nvidia driver. So maybe you can disable this (if you've enabled it).
But if you don't play games the normal nv driver from X.org is quite good and a lot smaller (see lmod).
