Gentoo, we need to talk...

I'm sorry gentoo but I've found another distro. I cant deny that we've had a lot of good fun in the past and we seemed like a perfect match when we first met. But these last few months you've become too much maintenance for me to handle, we have grown apart too much to keep going on.

I need something simpler in my life that understands me in a way you never could, and it's called ArchLinux.

I'm sorry gentoo, it's not me, it's you.

wink

Cheers, I think I'm going to like it here  big_smile

While I'm at it with the Arch love thing, I'd like to send out a bit of love to the Devs and anyone else who has a finger on the Arch pulse for maintaining a distro that doesn't try to be all things to all people.

Right on!

You'll probably start to notice just how many of us were involved with gentoo before we started fooling around with Arch wink

Re: Gentoo, we need to talk...

I have to agree that was nice . But I also feel the need to say that Arch will never replace Gentoo as my main distro . I'm willing to give it a try , put it on an older PC that has a Celeron @ 333 and could never compile Gentoo but never instead o Gentoo .
Why ? Well just because Gentoo is too damn good . It has every package I want , everything I install works and it's very stable. The only thing that Arch could offer would be less time to install a package but I don't really care about that . Besides I like the fact that I can use my custom flags and compiler options .
So I'm sorry while Arch might be a good one Gentoo is my distro and I'm not giving it up because there's nothing wrong with it ( at least from my point of view ) .
Good luck with Arch though . I'm waiting for 0.8 to give it a try . I feel it has a lot more potential than Gentoo because let's face it , other than geeks no one wants Gentoo . I see Arch as a good alternative to that Ubuntu , Mandriva , SUSE crap and let's not forget the worst of them all Fedora .
There are only 2 main distros I respect ( besides Gentoo which I love  smile  )  Debian and Slackware . But Debian is too slow and bugyy and Slackware is too basic . I know they're trying to keep things simple in Slack but they do it by letting it do nothing . No dependecies , no huge repository , nothing .
That's why I feel Arch is the best binary distro out there . I will give it a try soon and I hope it doesn't disapoint me . But Gentoo stays , sorry  .  smile

Re: Gentoo, we need to talk...

If Gentoo used binaries as well as source, I might still be using it.

(Then again, SystemV init scripts suck, and rc-update/modules-update should really be gotten rid of. They wouldn't need that crap if they used BSD-style init scripts.)

Does initng use /etc/rc.conf? If it doesn't, it's out. tongue

I'm interested to hear how you like Arch. I was a gentoo user for about 1.5 years.

living with arch for a few weeks has been a breath of fresh air for me. Not that theres anything particularly wrong with gentoo, it's just that maintaining my arch install is just so much more painless in regards to both effort and time.

Damn, i think i found my distro....  big_smile

Re: Gentoo, we need to talk...

My god!  The gentoo users are flocking, I tell you, flocking!

I know gentoo has it's strengths but I sincerely wonder how much the gentoo kudos factor for regular desktop users is starting to wear thin and people are now looking for something a bit more easy to maintain...

Re: Gentoo, we need to talk...

I used Gentoo before Arch. Not for anywhere near as long as you guys though, 6-8 months at best guess. Arch is my second real distro. I've installed Mandrake and Fedora but they were booted maybe twice and then removed for more Windows space tongue

Let me say that I have no problem with other people who like gentoo. It's a great distro to improve your linux knowledge on and very stable when it's up and running. Also a great community by the way.

But for the love of Pete, when it takes the better part of a weekend to update your distro i.e downloading, compiling, figuring out why compiles fail....it's just not cricket.
