[solved]Cinnamon won't start

I get "Oh no, something went wrong" when I log in and it tells me to log out and log back in. It never works. I created a new user and that works fine with cinnamon, so I gather it's something wrong with my configuration. I use mate right now, if that's relevant.

EDIT: I just tried removing everything mate related and I still have issues. Posting this from the new user.

EDIT: startx log:

So dbus/polkit looks to be failing. That doesn't make sense since it worked fine with mate and it's working now with a new user.

EDIT again: seems to have been fixed by removing compiz and all related packages, moving ~/.mate, .mateconf and .mateconfd to backup folders (just in case I want to go back to mate), removing ~/.gconf, clearing out ~/.config anything related to gnome (ibus, mate stuff, and so on). Sorry I can't be more precise.
For comparison, here is my startx output when all is working:

Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server

So it seems the dbus errors are not fatal.
