[SOLVED] Hard freeze at seemingly random intervals

This problem has only ever happened to me in an xorg-server but I'm in an xorg-server most of the time..
By hard freeze I mean everything locks up-no access to the tty's, and I can do nothing to get out but press the reset button.
One other effect it has when running audio-the audio loops like a broken record player, and the video freezes (unsure if the video loops as well, it might actually)

I have archlinux on my laptop and want it on my desktop-in the past I installed another distribution on my desktop which had a similar problem (so its not a recent kernel upgrade, maybe an ancient kernel upgrade if it is indeed the kernel). But somehow I don't believe that it is the kernel... I think it has something to do with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti graphics card I have though I could be wrong. In most of my linux experiences linux worked wonderfully-its only been my computer, a computer with an NVIDIA graphics card that did not.

So today I'm making this post because I want to solve this problem so I can keep ArchLinux on my desktop and not have to deal with hard system freezes at random intervals when I'm trying to get something done. After resetting all the files I was working on disappear.. sigh..

Here is my Xorg.log file-if you notice "ipv6.disable=1" in my boot-line, that is because previously I thought the problem might be ipv6 because it was happening when I lost internet connection and was doing other internet tasks. After disabling the freezes ceased for a little while. But now they are back.

If there are any other things you need please tell me. Unfortunately because its a crash they requires a hard reset, most log files about the crash get deleted. Can someone also tell me a way to output system logs in a terminal, I can just leave it visible while running my computer so when it crashes I can see some log output.

Thank you all in advance. I hope we can get this problem solved.

---------------------

At one point this thread was marked as solved. I've removed that because I'm still experiencing the problem. Current I'm looking for other possible causes to the problem. (Other than the NVIDIA driver which was possibly a previous cause of the problem but the fix that fixed someone elses system didn't fix my system)

---------------------

My solution: remove firetray addon from thunderbird.
I have no clue why the hell that stupid addon could possibly screw my computer over so bad. either it was indeed that-some sort of conflict with some other hardware like nvidia because it works fine on my laptop.

--------------------------------

Final Solution: though I thought it was that (and it indeed did stop the freezing, few others things were also causing it like a music player), eventually I uninstalled nvidia and installed nouveau (i still had some freezes). But I went into my bios-when seeing some stuff about acpi in there-to play with some settings and eventually got it!
I recommend anyone else experiencing freezes like this to look at their bios settings and look for things that might be disabled (that you might want) and vice versa (things that might be conflicting). In my case one thing I believe was a problem was a conflicting acpi with my bios and with linux.

Good luck anyone else with a similar problem!

Re: [SOLVED] Hard freeze at seemingly random intervals

You have lib32-nvidia-utils-beta installed instead of lib32-nvidia-utils, so I assume you tried the nvidia-beta drivers at some point to see if it helped?

Have you tried using the nouveau drivers instead as a way to see if the problem actually is the nvidia drivers? If you no longer get freezes then at least you'll know the problem is probably to do with the nvidia drivers & not a hardware fault with your card.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nouveau

Sorry am not of more use. Only came across this thread because since the end of October I've been having problems with my own nvidia card (8600m gs). System freezes similar to yours, then black screens when starting the X server and a general pain in the anus having to try various things I found on the internet to try to get it working again. I at first thought my gpu was about to die even tho it's never overheated. But it worked perfectly well using vesa drivers and nouveau drivers, not tried it with windows installed - but I now suspect it would work fine under windows too.

For the past three days it's run OK (fingers crossed) with the nvidia-beta drivers and this line added to the kernel boot parameters to disable the vesafb. A vesa framebuffer driver for the console graphics which can apparently destabilize nvidia drivers. Maybe it'll be worth a shot for you too.

video=vesa:off vga=normal

I probably don't need the beta drivers, just the line above, but I don't want to mess with things and revert to the regular ones now it's running smoothly again. First time I've had a problem with arch, and this nvidia card in more than 4yrs. But at least you're not alone, I've found far too many posts about nvidia based problems since I developed my own & had to search for solutions.

PS. you mention at some point you thought it was to do with internet tasks, I found quite a few threads about nvidia & flash problems. Might be worth you having a look for something from that angle

Re: [SOLVED] Hard freeze at seemingly random intervals

Thenk you Nixie for your reply! At least I know I'm not the only one... I will try those bootline parameters however I believe that I had the nouveau drivers before and I had a freeze-that was the original reason I tried to get the NVIDIA drivers. I had a windows 7 install before this and my graphics card worked beautifully so I can tell you that the problem is not the card itself. My computer froze three times this morning but hasn't again all day, and before this it was a very rare problem. Its not as horrible as it was in the past for me but its still an annoyance and not good if I'm in the middle of something important.

In terms of internet and flash problems I don't believe so-though I said internet its more because I have a desktop thats connected to wifi-one day the connection was really unstable (i wasn't on a flash website or anything just trying to update my system) and it crashed a few times on that day.

Another thing I've noticed is that the nvidia performance is really nothing like it was on windows-I will probably have to build a custom kernel for my nvidia card but I want to have something that works before I even start trying something like that.

If I discover anything I'll be sure to tell you as well.

Re: [SOLVED] Hard freeze at seemingly random intervals

I've had flash manage to freeze my PC, when using nvidia 310.14

But no such problems with nvidia 304.xx, which is what I recommend.

(The latest 304.xx drivers may be responsible for brightness bug, however.)

Re: [SOLVED] Hard freeze at seemingly random intervals

In terms of the "brightness bug" I have not experienced it, and I have a desktop so I'm not worried too much about it. But I am getting system lockups. I think I'll try nouveau for a bit but I seem to remember it being quite an unstable driver-and lacking.

Why can't NVIDIA just create a working driver for linux... -____-

Same issue here with last nvidia upgrade 304.64-1 on a GeForce GTX 560 Ti. Lots of hard freezes I NEVER had before.

Re: [SOLVED] Hard freeze at seemingly random intervals

I'd like to gather more information from you guys that also are experiencing this problem. Currently I'm trying to figure out what exactly is causing the problem. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with NVIDIA but I believe ALL functionality stops when the freeze happens-maybe I'm attacking symptoms and not problems. My main reason to believe its NVIDIA is the fact that I've run linux on plenty of computers (without NVIDIA) without problems, but I've always had a problem with my computer which has NVIDIA.

Somethings I'm trying:
Using particular programs, before I was using foobar2000 with wine-something which is just asking for bugs, so I switched to a different native linux music mangager: gogglesmm.
Before I was using google chrome (I've noticed that I almost always have google chrome running, who knows if thats what is causing the bug if flash is known to do it) so now I'm going to only use firefox for a little while and see if the problem occurs.

Can you guys provide a list of applications you usually have running (and are running when your computer crashes). For me it would be:

Dropbox, Pidgin, Transmission, Chrome, Thunderbird, GoggleSMM, xfce4 (and xorg of course), wicd (had the same issue with networkmanager)

If we can find some similarities-maybe we can figure out the problem.

Re: [SOLVED] Hard freeze at seemingly random intervals

As mentioned before, I had lots of hard freeze.
Nvidia broke things again, as it is very common. Using the new beta driver solved my issue.
More about this driver : http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=n … px=MTIyODE

Go to Arch AUR. Grab these two tarball package, even if flagged outdated:
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/nvidia-beta/
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/nvidia-utils-beta/

First, start with nvidia-utils-beta. Edit the PKGBUILD file:

pkgver=310.19
pkgrel=1
....
source=("ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-${ARCH}/${pkgver}/${_srcname}.run"    <----- uncomment
#source=("http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-$ARCH/${pkgver}/${_srcname}.run"   <-----comment
#	"20-nvidia.conf")          <-----comment

then

# pacman -Rs nvidia
$ makepkg -i --skipchecksums

When asked to remove nvidia-utils say YES. Pacman will then tells the upgrade aborted because some files were already installed. DO NOT force, but rather remove these files, then run again makepkg.

Now, next AUR package, nvidia-beta.
Again, edit PKGBUILD file:

pkgver=310.19
pkgrel=1
....
source=("ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-${ARCH}/${pkgver}/${_srcname}.run"    <----- uncomment
#source=("http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-$ARCH/${pkgver}/${_srcname}.run"   <-----comment

then

# pacman -Rs nvidia
$ makepkg -i --skipchecksums

Same as first package, remove the already installed files and run again the makepkg command.

ET VOILA, you have now a unbroken nvidia driver

Re: [SOLVED] Hard freeze at seemingly random intervals

Thank you for your reply gabx, I followed your directions and successfully got the version of the nvidia-beta drivers specified. So-far-so-good, I'll get back to here in a few days as to whether I experience the problem again or not. If this is the solution then maybe we can expect working drivers in the future for this card at least.

For people with other nvidia cards-try it out and see if it fixes your card.

Glad to hear.

Please, as a good Archer, mark the OP as [SOLVED]. It will certainly help users with a broken nvidia driver to directly read this thread. Sure we are not alone, unfortunately.

Unfortunately, my original fear as I marked this thread as solved has come true. I experienced the crash a few times more and so here I am. The crash has changed a little bit-before audio would loop-now it just stops. Still unsure if the problem is indeed nvidia so I'm continuing to look for other possible causes of the problem. I'll leave the thread as solved assuming that my nvidia issue has been solved.

Re: [SOLVED] Hard freeze at seemingly random intervals

I don't know about you guys but after going through all my programs one by one I discovered a few things and I THINK and HOPE that I've found the problem. (though because of the nature of the problem it may reoccur).

In openbox it didn't crash but in xfce4 it did-when I was running thunderbird. Thats the one thing I had open during every class and now that its no longer running my system has not crashed. It might not necessarily be thunderbird itself but it might be an extension on thunderbird called firetray (so I could get thunderbird in the tray).

I'm calling this the solution for me-something unrelated to nvidia-so the other people with problems: I recommend you suspect the least expected and really go through your programs to see which one might be causing the problems.

Thank you everyone for your help
