I'd join.. and as much as I like the cause.. Folding@home is my least fav. extra cpu cycle use program.
Not that I don't like the goal, both my grandma's, and my father had(have) cancer. But the program just isn't to my taste.
SETI@Home, however pointless the goal, I still prefer.
For SETI I have 439 Work Units in 2,186 hours. and I don't really run it.
I really like WCG though...still no linux client though! WCG basically works on various projects at different times. right now they are actually also doing a protien folding program...
I have 61,605 points and 275 in about 84 days of CPU time.

How do you mean? You wish someone else would take the time and effort to research new projects and pkg the necessary software for you OR that you have already looked at the options and seen that Linux can't support them?
How about? http://www.d2ol.com/dOL/download_instructions.html

You could install/boot into Windows and donate CPU time to becoming a spammer. You don't need to install any software either!

hehe. hahahaha. muhahahaha. he he. tehe...
erm, I could have a go I suppose. I still don't understand PKGBUILDs The Jacman one is based on Dusty's jedit PKGBUILD, then I messed it up: a bit of luck, voodoo, how's your father, and then Rocky Raccoon finished it off
I love how the bundles without a JVM are "experts only" - at least I can look forward to being an expert.
I'll have a look tonight maybe. I've been packing for my move to smelly London all weekend and only got 2 hours sleep last night. My mind isn't very useful at the moment - I've got the shakes - and my eyes keep doing that weird trick there the depth of field fluctuates. whoaa.

I think I shoulda rephrased that statement when I posted the original post. heh. I wish that their were more groups or teams made of archers outside of archlinux.org, #archlinux, etc. Whether a SETI and Folding@home team, or just any group that archers can join up in outside of IRC, Forum, Mailing List, Wiki, etc. Just forget me eh? It's way too early(and when I posted that it was WAY too late)
That aside, To be perfectly honost I wish WCG were ported to linux...

Now that we have things where we can make a difference, why would you ever choose SETI? SETI was the proof of concept.
So far I haven't noticed any problems with FAH. The high CPU is alarming to look at, but if I'm doing anything really intense, I just shut it down for a while.
For normal day to day operations, I don't see the problem.

Are you using foldingathome 502-3? I just tried this out and it does the same thing on my machine. Whenever I use the old daemon, this does not happen. Can you confirm this? You can find the old daemon here:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … dingathome

So, the new "improved" daemon is causing problems?
sepht, it would be useful if you could actually explain what the problem is so i don't have to spend time translating your code snapshots...

The rc script was just missing:
cd /opt/fah
which I would put in both start and stop
That did the trick. Thanks.
That also probably accounts for why my stuff isn't reporting to the web yet.

Ah - ok - i wonder if there is a way to pass a work dir to the app?

I have considerably updated this pkg but I think the AUR is broken so you cannot sync the new pkg from [community] yet.
You can now identify a user (and group) as which to run fah in /etc/conf.d/foldingathome - this creates a "profile" subfolder in /opt/fah.
I am also considering adding a default config with the Arch team number to /etc/fah/client.cfg - this file would be copied into new profile folders before fah is run for the first time.
I think that accounts for most issues bought up.

cd ..
cp -R * /usr/share
ln -s /usr/share/D2OL/D2OL /usr/bin/D2OL
}
It throws a lot of errors still during build, not sure how to get around that. Works fine though, no harm, no foul. Theres no real 'install' to speak of, you edit with the config file and than go and play. Any advise on improvements would be appreciated...

OK - is everyone happy with the new folding@home pkg? I have had bugger all feedback - does the run as a user thing work ok? Are the files going in the correct places? Are the stats correct on the webpage?
How about a default Arch client.cfg - any one want to create one?

The package is working fine for me.
I only made a small change, and it probably doesn't effect things.
I changed the cd line in start to:
cd /opt/fah
and I added
cd /opt/fah
to the beginning of stop.

I like the use of other ids to run the dang thing. Today it went into spazzz mode for some strange reason. It took forever to log into the box.
So, the only changes that I made to your script are:
[root@froggie rc.d]# diff foldingathome foldingathome.orig
26c26
< su $FAH_USER -c "/usr/bin/nice -19 /opt/fah/FAH502-Linux.exe -verbosity 9 > /opt/fah/$FAH_USER/myfah.log" &

Right now foldingathome is working fine for me, though i haven't tested running foldingathome as user. As for a default Arch client.cfg, I can post mine:
[settings]
username=archie
team=45032
asknet=no
bigpackets=yes
machineid=1
local=21
[http]
active=no
host=localhost
port=8080
Notice that there is a blank line at the end of the file, i think that i remember it saying somewhere that this is necessary. Also, I do not know what you should use for default username, maybe "Archie" or something similar.

1 more CPU for the Arch team
It's a PIII 800 that we just configured for our assocation.
2nd step will be auto start @ boot
3rd step, 5-7 more CPUs will come (we'll "dd" the first to the others one as soon as we succesfully tested it with end users).
Seeded last month: Arch 50 gig, derivatives 1 gig
Desktop @3.3GHz 8 gig RAM, linux-ck
laptop #1 Atom 2 gig RAM, Arch linux stock i686 (6H w/ 6yrs old battery ) #2: ARM Tegra K1, 4 gig RAM, ChrOS
Atom Z520 2 gig RAM, OMV (Debian 7) kernel 3.16 bpo on SDHC | PGP Key: 0xFF0157D9

Great! Thanks for joining
To get folding@home to autostart at boot, just add foldingathome to the daemons section in the rc.conf
