xinit randomly doesn't start [solved]

Recently I ran into a strange problem with xinit;  unfortunately there's not much I can say about it.  Basically, when I try to start X with xinit/startx, my laptop just hangs on a black screen.  I can't change ttys, magic Alt-SysRec keys don't work.  I am forced to hard reset.  This happens randomly; after a few times, xinit will proceed normally.  Needless to say, this process is tedious and risky (I'm afraid of file system corruption due to the hard reset).  I have nothing to go on to fix or diagnose this problem.  Any ideas?

For what it's worth, some information that may or may not help diagnose the problem.  My .xinitrc:

#!/bin/sh
# ~/.xinitrc

[ -f /etc/xprofile ] && . /etc/xprofile
[ -f ~/.xprofile ] && . ~/.xprofile

case "$1" in
i3)
    exec dbus-launch i3
    ;;
*)
    exec dbus-launch i3
    ;;
esac

.xprofile:

#!/bin/bash

xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources

input=ibus
export GTK_IM_MODULE=$input
export QT_IM_MODULE=$input
export XMODIFIERS="@im=$input"

# beep off
xset b off

# start services
trap 'kill $(jobs -p)' SIGINT SIGTERM EXIT

gpg-connect-agent updatestartuptty /bye
jack_control start

pulseaudio --daemonize --high-priority --realtime --disallow-module-loading --exit-idle-time=-1 --file=/usr/share/cadence/pulse2jack/play+rec.pa -n
ibus-daemon -drx

This started about a month ago I think?  I don't reboot often so I'm not sure when this started.

EDIT: here's my Xorg.0.log (after a failed xinit and hard reset, I copied it, but I'm not sure if this log is actually from the failed xinit):

Re: xinit randomly doesn't start [solved]

I've tried doing xinit 1> tmp.log 2>&1 to try to get something meaningful, but tmp.log is empty after I hard reset.

Re: xinit randomly doesn't start [solved]

Hmmm.  I think I am having the same problem (seemingly identical symptoms,
anyway).  It has happened to me twice now in the last week.  I'll try to
gather some debug info next time it happens.  Xorg logs were not saved, so
nothing meaningful there.  The last few messages before the crash from
/var/log/everything.log were these:

One thing I noticed: the mouse cursor managed to show up on the screen before
everything froze.  No idea if this is relevant.  FWIW, the only
non-boilerplate stuff in my xinitrc is this:

[[ -f ~/.Xresources ]] && xrdb ~/.Xresources
setxkbmap -option terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp
tint2 & exec fusion-icon

Re: xinit randomly doesn't start [solved]

I don't think I ever had this problem before the upgrade of xorg-xinit from
1.3.2-1 --> 1.3.2-3.  If you've really been having trouble for a month, then I
don't think this is the answer, as the package was built at the end of
October.  Anyway, I've downgraded that package.  I'll see if this happens
again in the next week or two.

**EDIT**  This did not help.  Will try downgrading xorg-server* next...

Re: xinit randomly doesn't start [solved]

I'm also seeing the cursor appear, though not always.  Usually it's a black screen, but sometimes the cursor shows up and is responsive for a moment or so before freezing.  This time, I had to try about 5 or 6 times before X would start properly.

Here's my journalctl for one of the failed session; it doesn't seem to show any problems, but I'm shooting in the dark at this point

Re: xinit randomly doesn't start [solved]

I've downgraded xorg-server* from 1.13.0.3 --> 1.13.0.2.  I'll let you know how it goes.  One other thing I've noticed:  the only times it has happened, I've been on battery power, and without an external display attached.  This had never happened at home when plugged in and attached to hdmi.

Re: xinit randomly doesn't start [solved]

I may have found the problem (although I can't say for certain yet)  In my .xprofile, the follow lines

xwallpaper &
fehwallpaper &

run scripts which start glslideshow and feh as my background simultaneous (glslideshow as my animated desktop wallpaper, and feh for my pseudo-transparent terminals--don't ask).  I'm going to blindly guess that having both run parallel leads to a bizzare race condition resulting in the random success/fail of xinit.  I commented out xwallpaper, and xinit started without a hitch (although as I said, it's been happening randomly so I don't know of this is a fix or a coincidence).

wes your problem might be different, but since you mention it only happening on battery power without an external display, you might want to see if there's any difference between the two when you start X.

Re: xinit randomly doesn't start [solved]

Yeah, that sounds like maybe something different is going on.  I downgraded xorg-server* as mentioned above, and so far, I've not had the problem recur.  And yes- since I have a docking station, two variables usually change at a time for me (display + a/c power).  I'll try to narrow it down at some point.

Anyway, if your fix proves to not be all you hoped, maybe try downgrading xorg-server*...

Re: xinit randomly doesn't start [solved]

The problem seems to have disappeared, so removing the conflicting line in my .xprofile seems to have done the trick.  Incidentally, I've also upgraded xorg-server to the newest package release, from 1.13.0-3 to 1.13.0-4.  I don't think that was the solution but for all I know it may well have been.

In any case, I'm marking this as solved.

Re: xinit randomly doesn't start [solved]

Since my downgrade, I have gone an entire week (with the same usage pattern) and had no issues;  I think I will file a bug report with xorg when I get time.

Re: xinit randomly doesn't start [solved]

My problem might also be caused by the new xorg-server, as I haven't touched my .xprofile in a while and this problem only started around the time I upgraded X.  Would you kindly post a link to the bug report when you get around to making it? for the sake of other users who may also encounter this problem.

Re: xinit randomly doesn't start [solved]

Sure thing.  For the record, I think the problem was actually introduced in
the xorg-server 1.12.4-1 -> 1.13.0-2 transition.  (I managed to steer clear
for an entire week after the first downgrade, but now the same thing has
happened again.  >_<  Doh.) The issue now, is that to test my theory I will
have to recompile my video driver to work with the old xorg-server, so this
will take a little more time + annoyance than I had hoped.

Re: xinit randomly doesn't start [solved]

Sorry to bring a kind of stale thread back to life, but I've just now found
the time to work on this.  I think our problems were perhaps closely related
after all -- I decided it isn't really a bug with Xorg, but the real problem
is a race condition in my xinitrc o.o  The new version of Xorg* made the race
come out less predictably (and more often bad) which threw me off.  Anyway, in
case anyone else runs into this, I have solved the issue by adding a small
sleep in my .xinitrc like this:

tint2 &
sleep 0.5
exec fusion-icon

(Before, I had just the line `tint2 & exec fusion-icon`.)

This has worked reliably for several weeks now, and many, many boots +
startx's.
