IMEs completely unusable after recent gnome-control-center upgrade

I upgraded my gnome-control-center this morning (3.6.3-2) and all my Chinese input methods are not found from the input sources list. (even checked 'show all' in dconf-editor). There's only a Chinese option but it doesn't point to any input methods.

I'm not sure what's going on on ibus and gnome. Are the IMEs still not ready for the new framework? Is there any workaround for that ?

Re: IMEs completely unusable after recent gnome-control-center upgrade

I found that too!

I enabled pinyin in the last week's update. So I was able to use pinyin even though I couldn't find pinyin anymore in INPUT SOURCES. Nevertheless, the pinyin candidate box was becoming abnormal, so I tried to reset the input sources. And then, I could no longer trigger pinyin because it wasn't in the INPUT SOURCES list.

IME has been a problem since recent major updates. Please sort it out. I would rather use the old way, to separate desktop envirnoment from IME.

Re: IMEs completely unusable after recent gnome-control-center upgrade

Same here. I use a German keyboard (hardware), what worked perfectly together with ibus in Gnome 3.4 (after a lot of trouble, but at least). After the Big Update to Gnome 3.6  I had to change to an US-English one (hardware), at the end it worked, but now nothing is working. No Chinese. No international English, nix!
I think it is a bad idea to mix the input method with the keyboard layout. This is what MS does for years and it is bad. I see, the decision comes from the Gnome project, but this does it not make any better.

It is also not clear, how to tell Gnome what IME it shall use. There is the keyboard layout, there are the the IBus adjustments and the gnome-tweak-tool. Which works? Which should one not use? Or is it the combination of all?

Devs, guys, how can I help to fix this, what information do you need?

Re: IMEs completely unusable after recent gnome-control-center upgrade

I posted the bug and got the following answer: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/32683#comment102640 what leads us to https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/32071
As I see, in the next few days this will not work.
I will try to change to uim, but I don't know if this will work. What a pity! IBus-pinyin was nice before Gnome 3.6. I could use simplified an traditional Chinese, easy to switch, easy to understand.

We'll see …

Re: IMEs completely unusable after recent gnome-control-center upgrade

Thanks for your report.

For the empty input-source problem, I need some more testing from other WM/DE, does the problem also exist in KDE, Xfce, etc? It seems like a gnome bug for me, at least for now.

And for the recent ibus-pinyin issue, it's known upstream and we are waiting for their release of new version.

@i18nde
Your problem in the bug report seems more likely a bug of ibus-googlepinyin, could you please try out other ime such as ibus-libpinyin or ibus-sunpinyin?

Re: IMEs completely unusable after recent gnome-control-center upgrade

I'll test the others. The ibus-libpinyin has a strange behaviour too, one must use only one keyboard layout (else there's a lot of trouble), but only with German keyboard (or any other)  layout in the gnome-control-center one can switch with the shift key between Chinese and German, the z and y are not twisted – means, I have a normal German keyboard layout and can input Chinese too.

Problem is, the ibus IME does not start with logging in, it does not care if yout put it into /etc/environment or .bashrc. One has to start it by hand every time.

Meanwhile: Take the predecessor SCIM as IME, works like a charm!
One has only to put

GTK_IM_MODULE=scim
QT_IM_MODULE=iscim
XMODIFIERS=@im=scim

into /etc/environment, it will start with the login, you can input traditional or simplified Chinese … just like ibus before the Big Upgrade. smile

Re: IMEs completely unusable after recent gnome-control-center upgrade

I got problem with the recent update too. I'm vietnamese and I need the ibus-unikey. With the big change to gnome 3.6 I got the intergration up and working. A lot of features and options in the old ibus applet is missing but at least it's just work.
But now it's not working anymore. I am able to type vietnamese if I start ibus-daemon --xim manually but the applet is gone forever and I have no means to turn off disable vietnamese input method in Ibus, the short cut key is not working and no interface available. I can either type vietnamese only or kill -9 ibus-daemon that's terrible.
I tried downgrade ibus to 1.4.99.20121006 but no avail, downgrade ibus to 1.4.2 make ibus short cut key work but still no interface and I have no mean to tell whether or not input method is enable and have to test by typing.

I will try to downgrade gnome-settings-daemon and gnome-control-center and come back to tell you guys the result.

Looking forward to hearing from you wonder. In the mean time I guess I will have to downgrade both gnome-control-center and gnome-settings-daemon. I confirm that downgrade both those two packages will restore ibus to its previous integrated-lack of feature-but at least working state.
