[SOLVED]Error when trying to boot from a usb drive

I have installed arch linux on a usb drive.
When I am trying to load it , I get the following error :

ERROR: '/dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201211' device did not show up after 30 seconds

Any ideas?
Thank you.

Welcome to the boards. Please read http://www.catb.org/esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

In order to provide constructive suggestions, people will need more information about your system.
How do you boot? What's in the boot file? Your mkinitcpio hooks, etc.

Re: [SOLVED]Error when trying to boot from a usb drive

…and you did set your partition label to ARCH_201211, right?

"open source is about choice"
No.
Open source is about opening the source code complying with this conditions, period. The ability to choose among several packages is just a nice side effect.

Re: [SOLVED]Error when trying to boot from a usb drive

In fact after discussing the matter in a local forum, I decided that I want to be able to install packages that remain to the usb drive after detaching it.
So the proper question I believe is how do I install arch linux to an external drive.
Thank you for your answers.

Re: [SOLVED]Error when trying to boot from a usb drive

Follow the Beginners' Guide and you should be fine.

You'll get to this part, where you'll add the "usb" hook, and that's about it.

Re: [SOLVED]Error when trying to boot from a usb drive

I've burnt that iso --> http://ftp.cc.uoc.gr/mirrors/linux/arch … 1-dual.iso on a blank cd, but my laptop (Sony Vaio VGN-FW21Z) cannot boot from it.
Am I doing something wrong?

Re: [SOLVED]Error when trying to boot from a usb drive

Use a BitTorrent client instead of a ddl (direct download link). This way it's less prone to errors, because it's checked while it's being downloaded.

Either that, or check its MD5 against the one from the Download page.

There's also this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … ion_medium

Note: The quality of optical drives and the discs themselves varies greatly. Generally, using a slow burn speed is recommended for reliable burns. If you are experiencing unexpected behaviour from the disc, try burning at the lowest speed supported by your burner.

Re: [SOLVED]Error when trying to boot from a usb drive

I used another laptop(dell) to boot to the live-cd and I made the usb stick booting the arch linux from there.
The Beginner Guide was a great source of information, to this effort.
Then I used the usb stick on my sony vaio and I made the wireless setup from there.
Thank you guys for your help.
