I am on the MATE desktop and using SLIM.
The shutdown menu only has suspend and there are no options for reboot or shutdown and so I have to reboot or shutdown from the command line everytime.
I searched the forum and there seem to be several people having the same problem with XFCE, I tried all the suggestions but they didn't work for me.
Here is my .xinitrc:
#!/bin/sh
#
# ~/.xinitrc
#
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
[ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
done
unset f
fi
exec mate-session
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Just a thought, but several posters having problems are running slim as dm. Maybe try starting with just startx or xinit to see if slim is the problem. It might just be similair to lxde and be that mate doesn't work well with systemd-logind.

There's already several posts about this in the MATE thread and elsewhere. Problem looks to be the current version of MATE(1.4) relies on consolekit which is no longer part of the official repositories or being developed for that matter. I was looking at the MATE roadmap last night and systemd-logind support should be in the 1.6 version. I'm using MATE with LXDM and just log out and use the reboot/shutdown in LXDM, does Slim not have that option? Last option would be get consolekit from the AUR, up to you to decide if that's worth it.

I can shutdown and reboot from Slim but I just wanted to fix this problem with MATE. I checked the roadmap now, and as long as it is coming in MATE 1.6 I can wait it is not bugging me too much. Installing consolekit would not be worth it.
Thanks!
