[SOLVED] NB205 laptop suddenly stopped suspending with lid closed

The Toshiba nb205 doesn't seem to support suspend on lid close out of the box, but it did work when I followed the steps on this page 6 months ago.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Acpid

Everything was working beautifully up until a few days ago.  I've been in an Openbox environment for 90 days without a reboot. Life is good.

At first, the suspend-when-lid-closed stopped working. I could still get it to suspend with the Fn-F3 key, however. After some tinkering, now the Fn-F3 key doesn't suspend anymore. pm-suspend from the root command line returns no result except another prompt. I've mangled /etc/acpi/handler.sh

My final glimmer of hope was logging out of of Openbox and logging in, without a reboot, an XFCE environment. Suspend on lid close DOES work now, but only if not plugged into AC power.  Go figure that out.

My desired result: to get suspend to work, suspend with lid closed to work, in Openbox, and even when it's plugged into AC power. I hope I've provided enough information.  Please guide me. I'm getting frustrated.

My /var/log/pm-suspend.log is 400k (I backed it up and created a new file when I moved into XFCE where it now works. So I'm reluctant to paste it here and scare you off. Please help.

Re: [SOLVED] NB205 laptop suddenly stopped suspending with lid closed

OP here: is the change related to systemd/systemctl? This was an arch install with rc.conf and DAEMONS as arch was installed 6 months ago, but maybe the recent migration broke it? If so, how would I test this? Grasping at straws here.

Re: [SOLVED] NB205 laptop suddenly stopped suspending with lid closed

Very crappy post.  Information includes:

-It used to work
-Now it doesn't
-lid suspend doens't work
-I broke Fn-F3
-I use openbox and XFCE
-Lid suspend works on XFCE with a/c

Do you see the problem there?  You are very good at indicating what does and does not work.  But you have made no indication of what you have done, why you have done it, what information you have found about your problem.  You are just waaayyy too vague!

I think this part irritates me the most

So you mave information, but you will not provide it, yet you want help.

This sucks...

Edit: Read this (the whole f*cking page!), as it was probably meant for people like you.  When you finish, you may jsut want to read it again.

Thank you for telling me that my post was crappy. I had no idea it would less crappy with a 400k pastebin. Your polite "RTFM" was most helpful.

Do you want people to be nice and polite? Or do you want help? You have provided no further useful information in your response. If that log file isn't helpful, maybe another one is. Or some information of some sort.

How are you suspending?

Did you or did you not migrate to systemd?

Note that this would require rebooting.

Is your system up to date? (Wouldn't that require rebooting?)

Etc. etc.

@cfr, thanks for spelling it out for the OP.  I guess my post wasn't clear enough.  I really like your additions to your sig.  I think the "Help Vampires" article should be standard reading for anybody who wants to use open-source... hell, anybody who wants to use the internet!

Re: [SOLVED] NB205 laptop suddenly stopped suspending with lid closed

I thought it was clear enough but the OP seems to have missed the point...

As for the additions, I just realised that the number of times I've looked up, copied and pasted the link on asking questions in the last couple of days is driving me nuts and I might as well just include it as a permanent feature. I like that the one on help vampires includes a guide to not being one... conversion rather than a council of despair, if you like smile.

Re: [SOLVED] NB205 laptop suddenly stopped suspending with lid closed

Renamed pm-suspend.log and pm-powersave.log to see what new would be written when I do the following:

In Openbox, when I run
# acpi_listen
and press Fn-F3, I get "button/sleep SBTN 00000080 00000000 K"

Pressing Fn-F3 from the desktop: no result.

When I run
# systemctl suspend
I get: "Failed to get D-Bus connection: No connection to service manager."

Also noted that handler.sh had a handler.sh.pacnew - renamed both to use new one.

Rebooted. Followed steps on
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Acpid

Works from Openbox.
Thread solved.
