SDL-related (?) freeze problem

This is a problem that has been messing with me for as long as I remember... no idea what it comes from, but I am using testing, and am fully aware of the problems that often follow.

The error appears when starting certain applications. It completely freezes the desktop (except for the mouse cursor), and X can't even be killed with CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE.

I rediscovered the problem when I downloaded and ran Frozen Bubble, which is built on SDL. So are games running with pygame, the python wrapper for SDL. A third program that introduces the problem is QT Designer (/opt/qt/bin/designer, part of the "qt" package), which as far as I know don't use SDL. So I'm not sure if it's SDL-related or not. It's basically only these three apps that causes the problem, that I've yet encountered. But I'll check out some more SDL applications and see if I get similar errors.

Before you say it, it's driver-independent (tried nv and nvidia), DE-independent (the problem occurs with everything from twm to KDE), and composite-independent.

Any ideas?
