Steam is in repos! Wow, it's a little bit unusual to put such young and closed-beta package inside official repositories. It will help to adopt it and keep updated, sure, but I hope it's just a special case not the rule. Anyway I'm glad it happened (the same way I got e.g. flash in repos) but it's a little bit to soon for my taste.
More details in arch-dev-public mailinglist.
I would have waited to the official release to place it in the repositories not the beta version since its not available to everyone - and there's still issues with the beta version (example: mouse pointer is in the opposite direction, games not installing or running) but other's will disagree with me.
Also what about the license? does it comply with the Arch Linux policy since steam is proprietary - I'm waiting until the official steam is release and will download it directly from valve's website once it's made available for non ubuntu distributions.

Arch isn't Debian. Opera is proprietary too and in the repos.

Right now the Steam package is just not that useful. I think the AUR is fine for it. When it comes out of beta, Arch has explicit permission to distribute it and people can buy games then it should come to the repos. With what we have now installing games is not that easy because of dependencies (see: Steam ArchWiki page)

Did you scan read my comment - note that I didn't say Arch Linux was debian all I said was waiting for it to become available for "non-ubuntu distributions" meaning once valve makes steam available for all Linux distros instead of just ubuntu.

I read your comment. I fairly well understood you didn't actually mistake Arch Linux for Debian. It did seem like there was some confusion about Arch's license policy however.
So I replied saying that license is not a problem. Arch is much less restrictive about what goes into the repositories compared to popular distros like Debian and derivatives like Ubuntu.

Seems that we have to have a proper distribution agreement: https://mailman.archlinux.org/pipermail … 24046.html

I think that we won't have to worry to much about beta and final release anyway, since the steam client is just a small program that pulls the real client over the internet (Over 100MB in that case). They already updated the client once and I think it will simply slowly grow out of the beta without anyone ever having to pull the latest client from our repos again.

Is there any way to install TF2 when running Steam with steam steam://open/games?

Nope you have to be in the closed beta otherwise it won't download.

I really didn't see the big fuss. I'm sure valve was slightly excited with the idea that all they had to do was release a .deb for the packagers of all other distributions to repackage their client for the respective other distros.

In the world where company can go on suing rampage over rectangle shape you need to be careful. I think too that this is convenient for Valve but we need to keep the game clean, and they need to straight up their policy about packaging, that's all. It's not only about Arch btw, other distros will face packaging of Steam eventually so it's good to be clear about rules from the start. No biggie, carry on.

Has anyone gotten runtime variables working with Steam? As I'm using HD4000 intel integrated graphics I need to set force_s3tc_enable=true for Amnesia to work. This works if I run the game from the SteamApps folder, but I'm trying to set it inside Steam. Setting it inside Steam right now doesn't work.

Do you have "libtxc_dxtn" installed? this is needed for 3d games and also for some 2d games. It can be found in the User Repository here https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/?O=0&K=dxtn

Yep they seem to have opened it up to everybody. Now I only have to get home on friday to my desktop PC.
Hope they don't change their mind in the meantime.

That means I'm going to install Steam again! Busy day, tomorrow..

I just have to say that I find it absolutely awesome that there are so many Arch users on the steam message boards. It seems like we are the majority

Does anyone get a segmentation fault with the following output: https://gist.github.com/3147ba2bd7934a16be39 ?
I know that Arch Linux isn't supported by Steam, but any help would be appreciated.

It segfaulted once while downloading on line 126, but I can't really remember what was output about.

I can't believe TF2 plays just as well on Linux as it does on Windows, if not better. At least, with nvidia's blob. With nouveau it's a bit laggy.
It looks like Valve's actions are starting to entice third-partys too: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=n … px=MTIzMTY

Not happy about the way things are going, signs are there that Steam is going to introduce bad habits.
Nobody is going to bother with 64 bit builds of games, no point releasing outside of Steam resigning us all to multilib if we want to play modern games.
Steam is auto-updating it's client sidestepping package managers, horrible.
I have a bad feeling about this.

Because you're missing the point here. Short version: If people have to use Steam it's better for everybody to have Steam under Linux. No matter if you use Steam or not. Especially seeing how Valve is handling situation - they're playing really nice with Linux users, they actually want to fix some things.
PS 64bit version is out of the question for now because they got more important things to do at the moment. It's the same reason why they're targeting only Ubuntu. You can't expect them to fight on every single front at once.
