linux nconfig error

I started to compile linux-ck and when it reached nconfig it did this:

Odd... never seen that before.  Change line 163 in PKGBUILD to make menuconfig and see if that works.  It's as if your terminal doesn't support the ncurses menus.

EDIT: By the way, this isn't a linux-ck issue I suspect.  I'll bet you $20 that if you try to compile linux from ABS and enable nconfig there, you will also find this to be true.  Do you mind editing the topic to read "linux nconfig error?"

make menuconfig works and compiling linux from ABS with make nconfig shows the menu, but all the keypresses are printed instead of interpreted.

I'm using urxvt and my locale is en_US.UTF-8.
On a potentially unrelated note, the escape codes appear slightly different in st:
